WHITESBURG, Ky. (AP) - An Appalachian advocacy group placed ads in some of the nation's largest newspapers Tuesday, criticizing a proposed CBS reality TV series that it says is demeaning to rural people.
The show, which is being called "The Real Beverly Hillbillies," places a poor Appalachian family in a Beverly Hills mansion. Casting for the show is being conducted in the Appalachian states of West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

I actually think it would be funnier to put Tori Spelling in the Appalachians than vice versa

And they are at best of average or below average looks, yet they have all seem to have been able to get trophy wives!

Finally, here's a link to the
experts. I'm sure they'd love to engage you with a debate on their stupidity.

"get trophy wives"
Yep, if you only watched TV you'd think that all 50 year old men always had 30'something wives who were all knockouts. Oh, and these women all have 150 IQs compared to the clueless men who watch sports 24/7 and only useful knowledge is every QBs pass interception percentage. These couples have kids but you wonder how with the guys being so dumb???

Appalachian Americans?
Don't tell me this is a new victim minority group in the making

"Yep, if you only watched TV..."
The only shows I watch are The Agency, Law & Order, CSI (haven't seen the new Miami version), JAG, The Amazing Race (the ONLY "Reality show" I have ever seen), News (Fox), NFL and selected shows on TV Land.
You might note the complete lack of sitcoms in there. I am sure that all the truly good material was already covered, and better, by Lucy, Dick van Dyke, MTM, probably ending with the last good series being Taxi. Every now and then I'll try watching one of the new offerings, or I get them on flights, and they always stink. They keep showing "Friends" on my LA-Pit flights and I have yet to crack a smile, much less laugh. The same was true for the two epsiodes of "Seinfeld" I attempted to watch.
There was a great article in the WSJ the other day how TV shows, in sitcoms and commercials, that all men are stereotyped ignorant, childlike slobs. And how men don't complain because, well, real men don't complain. I couldn't believe it when recently I heard some Feminazi state that if men had breast cancer it would be cured by now. Like there is no prostate cancer.
All the money goes to the PC illnesses: Breast cancer and AIDS. Real men suck it up and don't whine. I'm not whining -- just pointing out the truth. There is not much we can do about it, anyway.

Heck, I find "The West Wing" to be demeaning to the U.S. Constitution, the United States of America, and acting in general, but hey...am I making a fuss???? |

They were also the only couple without children. Makes a huge difference.

One of the other families did collect enough firewood and were sufficiently stocked for the winter, but because they were dysfunctional as a group, the experts concluded that they wouldn't survive. Apparently, tolerating others in close quarter was the key to getting through the winter.

people who have southern accents are dumb Or is it that all dumb people have Southern accents? Seems odd that the Left's beloved ex-resident had a Southern accent, and yet he was alleged to be the smartest man on earth. And Jimmuh Cahtuh is next in line for canonization, according to his sycophants. Let's not talk about Lyndon Johnson or Robert Byrd.
Apparently the stereotype of the drawling Southern yokel is as selective as the rest of the Left's iconography.

"The only shows I watch are The Agency, Law & Order, CSI (haven't seen the new Miami version), JAG,"
We watched the new CSI Miami and it is merely OK. I like the rest of your list.
JAG; I like it but wonder why we can't ever have a military program that doesn't wind up in a court room?? Why do military good guys have to be taken before a court? Look at most of the really good military movies as an example A Few Good Men? I wonder???
Can't we speak about the military anymore without the inevitable condemnation upheld by a judge - similar to the civil rights struggle?
"I am sure that all the truly good material was already covered, [snip] with the last good series being Taxi."
We watch Darma and Greg. The conflict of a liberal family and a conservative family -- love over comming all and the real America. This mirrors the real life drama of my son who married a liberal air head.
"They keep showing "Friends" on my LA-Pit flights and I have yet to crack a smile, much less laugh."
Boy this should be a study in brain-dead-ness how people think Friends is funny. BTW my daughter-in-law's favorite?????
"There was a great article in the WSJ the other day how TV shows, in sitcoms and commercials, that all men are stereotyped ignorant, childlike slobs. "
I'd love to see this article but then I'd just get madder!

"Apparently the stereotype of the drawling Southern yokel is as selective"
As selective as all blacks are enlightened except for Clarence Thomas and Colin Powell.
As selective as all hollyweird persons are cool except Arnold Schwartzeneger and Charleton Heston.
As selective as Bush leads an evil empire but Nelson Mandela is a saint??

That's a really GREAT idea!!!!

"Fish-out-of-water themes have been a staple in movies and television for many years - from 'Pretty Woman' to 'Crocodile Dundee' to 'The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.' And the fish that's out of water has always been the hero or heroine." This is real life. There won't be any "heroics" as there will be no "drama". There will be laughing at the real life country bumpkins who don't fit in though.
If Pretty Woman was so great, how about going to the Vegas Strip, taking a prostitute off the street and setting her up with a mansion?
The real life Crocodile Dundee was gunned down in an Austrialian version of the Waco seige. Lottsa laughs. What a pinhead.

The philosophy of Hollywood seems to be its okay to make fun of some folks, but I bet if you pitched a show with a similar scenario, say a poor black family out of some urban ghetto into a mansion in Beverly Hill, a few would get quite wrankled at the idea. Here's a show destined to generate viewers: follow the daily activities of the Gore family as they show that they are like any other family and Albert Gore Junior, defeated politician, moves into one of his slum homes in disrepair.
Albert: "Darn this sink. It's stopped working again! I'll call the landlord and get him to fix it."
Tipper: "But, hone-y... you're the landlord!"
Call it "Algore's: I'm The Slumlord".
