[history]
RALEIGH, N.C. -- The United States has more troops around the world than at any other time in history, and a lot of those troops are based in North Carolina.
North Carolina already has sent 30,000 troops into six countries within striking distance of Iraq, plus an unknown number of airmen in Oman and Turkey patrolling the northern and southern no-fly zones.

Throw in the National Guard and Reserves, and a possible showdown with Saddam Hussein could have a distinct and overwhelming Tar Heel connection. Well, the Tar Heels will have no trouble with Saddam, but what about the Wolfpack?

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The United States has more troops around the world than at any other time in history, and a lot of those troops are based in North Carolina. Wrong. We had millions of troops overseas in WWII, way more than our total troop strength today. We probably have troops deployed to more countries than ever before though.

The Pentagon has said it wants 100,000 troops in the Gulf region by Jan. 31. To put that into perspective as far as build-up, there were half a million troops in the area at the height of the Gulf War.Attesting to the theory that in the last time we engaged Iraq, 9% of the munitions delivered were smart weapons that casued 74% of the destruction; this time around we expect to deploy over 75% smart weapons in the first week of conflict.... I'm sure the damage will allow a much smaller force, aided by controlling 40% of Iraq via No Fly Zones will prove too much to overcome or defend beyond 10-days for Saddam. If we do get into a shooting match, it will be short and Saddam will leave with safe passage for another terrorist state in North Africa....

I live within easy driving distance of all the bases mentioned. It's nothing for me to see planes and helicopters flying around and back and forth at all hours. One day a few months ago I was out in my yard and saw one of those attack helicopters swoop down so low I could have seen the pilot's face if I hadn't been so transfixed by the odd size and shape of the helicopter. I'm more used to seeing Marine helicopters.
