Perfect family unraveling? Scott Peterson's sister was just interviewed on Fox news. She says she "hopes" Scott is not involved with Laci's disappearance.

that's possible.

but normal middle class families don't encounter death by surprise intruders as much as from family arguments, friends, or business partners.

for example, last year's murder of van dam child was accomplished by a neighbor and friend.

the police didn't look farther than westerfield.

meanwhile, the fear among numerous families was that an intruder would take one of their children.

this was where i encountered this police statistic; the police were attempting to placate worried parents by saying that most murders are done by knowns instead of unknowns.

Only by extending your concept to include "acquaintances" are you right. Such as "I knew the old lady down the street a little before I smashed her head in looking fo some crack money." Or "I had seen Jose around the corner a few times before I threw up signals to him and shot him."

It is false that most killers are friends, or kin though many are.

It is sad. They are trying to convince themselves that their loved one, one with whom they entrusted their daughter, sister, granddaughter could be responsible for her disappearance. By denying that her husband possibly could have done anything to harm her relieves the relatives of responsibility of not seeing what was really going on between Laci and her husband. Perhaps in their grief stricken minds they are not ready for this. Which is understandable considering the harsh circumstances. I knew an abused victim. She in no way would let on to her family what was really taking place. Her husband was so wonderful to others outside their home, she did not feel her family or friends would or could digest the truth. In her sick abused mind she had the idea that her 'situation' would get better. Perhaps this is one of the reasons Laci liked being surrounded by her family. They in a way gave her safe guard.
All speculation of course.

You'd think if Scott KNEW that what they found must be Laci, he wouldn't be just sitting there twiddling his thumbs. He'd try to run, or commit suicide, or something. Would you really just sit there "filing your nails while they're dragging the lake"?

My personal suspicion is that she died as the result of a violent altercation that was unplanned.

I like your thinking out loud post.

There is something in between your two scenarios, in between fully premeditated and heat of passion. I think OJ slashed his wife's head off in a steaming fit of anger that had been building for hours. He did not show good signs of planning any getaway or trying in advance to escape blame. I guess there can be a sort of crime of passion in which the killer does lay in wait a little. Still counts legally as premeditated.

Actually, it is more likely the cops are trying to bluff the husband into spilling something. The cops find this "signature" on Thursday. They may have found what they've been looking for since Christmas, but the divers are too fatigued and the weather too bad to bring up the item until Saturday?! Why not Friday? Why not get fresh divers? There may be some rain and fog up in the San Francisco area, but what's so unusual about that? If the weather wasn't too bad to search on Thursday, why was it too bad to bring up what they found? Nope — this sounds like a possible bluff to me.

Personally I do not believe it is her. I hope it is not her and hope she comes home again. I think it strange after no leaks that LE would come out with this cryptic report last night and then further indicate they would not be able to check it out further till saturday. Pretty torturous for the family wouldn't you think? Or is their motive for another reason.....at this point only one can guess. Regardless, if it is her and Scott did it, he has till tomorrow to make his next move. On the other hand, he may feel the guilt and perhaps he wants to get caught and done with.

Do you remember the case of that army doctor, who murdered his whole family and claimed it was by some Manson family-type hippies? It took a long time for his inlaws to be able to get their minds around the idea that their son-in-law could have possibly killed their daughter and all their grandchildren.

Also, remember the OJ case, in which her family was too in awe of their famous son-in-law to step in and help their abused daughter.

I have my "bluff" suspicions as well, but the wait is legitimate. The storm that's rolling through is pretty decent, dumping a lit of rain, a little wind, and apparently quite a bit of chop out on the Bay. The San Francisco Bay can be a pretty tough dive in the first place because of the low visibility, swift currents, and cold temperatures, but diving on a day like today would be ASKING for trouble. If it is her body, and it's stayed there over the last several weeks (through more powerful storms), it will still be there tomorrow. There's no need to put any divers lives in danger just so we can answer the question a day sooner.

Yep...

The water is dead flat calm in the marina, and visibility is not an issue...cause it always is zeor this time of year...and it cant be rain...divers are wet by nature.

Bunch of BS if you ask me.

Oh, indeed, as do I. I am exactly as pregnant as Laci, and I have felt that tie to her since the start of this. I hope she is feeling little limbs moving inside her today somewhere, wherever she is, as I do. This case is very upsetting to me.

Your point about the LE leak is a good one. Why suddenly a leak, and this silly notion that they can't get down there until Saturday? If they are trying to make hubby squirm, it must mean that they KNOW there is a body. Let's face it: if you did not kill your wife and throw her into the exact spot of the bay where you told everyone you were, why would you squirm at all? You would KNOW full well that even if they found a body it would not be Laci. Weird.

"I was on a jury in a murder trial and the guy kept the body in the spare tire well of his hatchback. For a year and a half."

I was on a jury 18 mo ago...we convicted a guy who beat his wifes head in in the kitchen. he moved her to the basement, put one of her shoes on the stairs as if she fell, and propped her head on an old ships bell (from 1840 or something) as if she smacked her head on it.

He wiped up all the blood in the house, but they used luminol to find it

but for some reason, he forgot to remove his shirt, shoes, and a paper towel with her blood on it...that were in his car.

Thank you. I was trying to think of the case where the inlaws could not fathom their son in law, murderer. That is exactly the case that was nagging me. If the "object" in the water is her and if her husband did it, I believe he will base his next move on the reaction he receives from the family. Perhaps they will start turning on one another. Before it was an emphatic no, Scott could not do this, now the sister has come down a notch since this news and says she "hopes" he had nothing to do with it. I find that interesting. Doubt may be starting to enter the picture. If I find it hard to believe a man could kill his unborn child, I can imagine how hard this would be for the family to believe. Again, I hope she comes home and he is innocent.

a sexual indiscretion that was discovered or admitted?

That would make sense if Laci cruelly broke the news to her husband that the baby was not his.

Could a tethered submersible robot get down there, or would it be thrashed too much? No risk to people that way and an answer sooner...

There are a number of Bay Area webcams located all over the place. This webcam link is from a sailing club located at the Berkeley Marine. OCSC Sailing School - San Francisco Bay

Also, Bay Area Live Web Cams @ San Francisco Bay .com has all kinds of webcam links as well. It may take a bit to load so dial-up folks beware, it will take a bit to load the home page.

Unless you were 100% certain that Laci would not be found, wouldn't you want to leave this up?
