but normal middle class families don't encounter death by surprise intruders as much as from family arguments, friends, or business partners.

for example, last year's murder of van dam child was accomplished by a neighbor and friend.

the police didn't look farther than westerfield.

meanwhile, the fear among numerous families was that an intruder would take one of their children.

this was where i encountered this police statistic; the police were attempting to placate worried parents by saying that most murders are done by knowns instead of unknowns.

I imagine the stats reflect that much more often with younger children than with teens/adults, especially when you consider child abuse or neglect.
