Texans brace for cold front
01/09/2003
Associated Press
Brisk northerly winds and much cooler temperatures are on the way for Texas, the National Weather Service said Wednesday.
Forecasters warned that unseasonably warm temperatures will be displaced by bitterly cold northerly winds and the prospect of snow for much of the state by the weekend.
A new weather system is on its way, weather officials said.
Winds of 10 to 15 mph were already being reported statewide by early Wednesday afternoon.
Temperatures were mostly in the 70s across Texas on Wednesday, but temperatures will begin dropping, meteorologists said.
By the weekend, expect below-freezing temperatures at night for the northern half of the state, made worse by brisk northerly winds. Snow is possible, with daytime temperatures as cold as the 40s and below.
Even across the southern half of Texas, high temperatures are expected to be in the 40s and 50s by the weekend, with low temperatures in the 30s and a chance of rain.
In the Texas Panhandle, temperatures are expected to be in the lower 50s Thursday afternoon, then drop into the teens. Highs are expected to be only in the 40s on Friday and not get out of the 30s on Saturday.
Farther south, at Lubbock and surrounding area, highs are expected to be in the 50s on Thursday, with lows dropping into the 20s Thursday night and highs mostly in the 40s for the next several days thereafter.
Along Interstate 20, from Abilene to the Midland-Odessa area and on into far West Texas, lows will drop into the 20s on Thursday and Friday nights, but the high temperatures should get into the 50s. The exception will be along the Rio Grande, where highs will get into the 60s and 70s.
Highs will remain in the 70s and 80s across South Texas on Thursday and the 50s and 60s on Friday, with the highs dropping into the 40s and 50s for the weekend. Low temperatures are expected to be in the mid-to-upper 30s.
Winds will be highest in North Texas at 10 to 20 mph, with highs in the lower 60s on Thursday, in the upper 40s on Friday and the lower 40s on Saturday. Lows will be in the lower 30s for the next several nights with northerly winds at 10 to 20 mph making it seem much colder.

Regarding my "yeah, right!" comment. That applies to the Dallas/Fort Worth area. The panhandle is much more likely to get snow than we are. I'll believe it when I see it...

LOL! Last time I remember snow, my girls were about 5 years younger and used up about 3 city blocks to make a 2 foot high snowman.

Well, it might snow in Frisco, but not in Plano. Mr. Perot will not allow it.

Snow? I'm still waiting for winter to get here; however, my electric bill is very happy that it hasn't arrived yet :)

As long as it doesn't come as far south as Austin, I'll be happy. I can't imagine what these hilly roads would be like with snow and ice on them--and I don't want to find out!

I can't imagine what these hilly roads would be like with snow and ice on them--and I don't want to find out! They're deadly. Most Texans don't have a clue about driving on ice or snow. I can vividly recall a trip from Houston to Austin last year when we'd had an ice storm. Going towards Austin, it appeared to be a lovely sunny day, albeit cold. Looking back the other direction, every tree, every sign showed significant icing.
We saw five wrecks in the 150 miles, most of them on bridges, one a three car mess.
If it snows or ices up, stay home !

Don't count out the Texas Hill Country. We used to have snow when we lived in Boerne -- one time at Christmas it got down near zero and we had snow on the ground. BTW, I hate northeners that blow in. You go from beautiful weather to very cold in a matter of hours. More than once I got caught in San Antonio with a sweatshirt when one blew in and by the time we got home, the weather required a winter coat and gloves.
Doesn't look like the cold front headed your way is going to be as bad as they first thought. The weather here this morning is chilly but not really cold or windy and we get these northerners before you guys. Now watch it turn cloudy, cold, and windy after opening my mouth!

I will certainly stay home if it gets icy here. I couldn't even get down my driveway!

Well Yankees can't drive on ice either! lol...... Last week my husband was on his way to a site in Maryland and there were cars all over the road...... ice........ the difference in the north is that plows clear the roads so well....... when they don't, folks here can't drive on it either.........
Snow I love, but I hate ice.........

Write an "Exception Note' to yourself. There has been a large influx of people into our state since the late 70's. First it was the exodus of the state of Michigan up to the mid eighties, then Illinois and then every other state who's employer moved to our great state seeking corporate refuge.
Just roll you window down and ask them where they're from. We added up to 10 million people in the last 12 years. This does not include the Mexicans, they will not drive in ice or snow and we do not know how many there are in the state.

Hopefully I'm far enough south of Dallas to escape this. You haven't lived until you've been in Waco for the dreaded ice/snow panic. Today is so pretty it's hard to believe we will get cold. I feel for you if it comes your way!

Yes, I remember last year, they had the big "It's going to freeze, snow and everyones going to die" panic in Waco and nothing ever happened. It turned out to be a big joke! Waco usually gets snow 1-2 days a year. You are correct, today is a nice day!

You are welcome to stay, just don't throw your empty beer cans out the window, let people merge into traffic and give the two-finger wave when driving on two-lane black tops.
