Cornyn gets seat on judiciary panel

Texas senator had campaigned for more conservative judges

01/07/2003

By TODD J. GILLMAN / The Dallas Morning News

During the fall Senate campaign, John Cornyn vowed to fight for more conservative federal judges.

On Monday, GOP leaders granted the former attorney general and Texas Supreme Court justice his wish for a seat on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

One of the first orders of business may be to reconsider his former colleague, Texas Supreme Court Justice Priscilla Owen, to a federal appeals bench - a nomination the committee shot down when Democrats controlled the Senate.

President Bush has said he will renominate Justice Owen now that Republicans control the Senate. One liberal advocacy group, People for the American Way, issued a memo Monday titled "The Approaching Armageddon on Judicial Nominations" that reflected the looming battles Mr. Cornyn may soon face as a member of the Judiciary Committee.

He is one of 10 new senators who will take the oath of office Tuesday. But thanks to the early departure of Sen. Phil Gramm, he actually joined the Senate in a low-key ceremony on Dec. 2.

Mr. Cornyn also received two other committee assignments Monday that he hopes will yield better highways and infrastructure for Texas: Budget and Environment and Public Works. He had been given a seat on the Armed Services Committee.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 6 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The next 12 to 24 months -- beginning with the Senate's return to Washington this week and President Bush's expected nominations to the federal judiciary could determine the law of the land and the shape of our government for the next several decades. The judicial choices President Bush makes, and the response of the U.S. Senate, will have an extraordinary impact on the lives and liberties of all Americans, their children and their grandchildren.    Consider:    -- By 2004, all 13 federal circuit courts of appeal could well be controlled by Republican-appointed judges. And...

I surely hope Cornyn has better judgement than Eisenhower and Bush Sr. The U.S. Supreme Court justices appointed would make a jackal toss its cookies.

I'm glad Cornyn got this assignment. As a former justice on the Texas Supreme Court, he is far more qualified than many of the people on the committee, including all of the Rat bozos, of course.

One liberal advocacy group, People for the American Way...

At least they identified this anti-American hate-mongering communist organization as liberal. I still don't know why anyone besides neo-Nazis care what these Jew-hating Saddam-butt kissers think.

THANKS FOR THE PING.
IMO, the most important thing that this admenistration may do domestically is the appointment of conservative judges.
Hearing my father, who is still practicing law at the age of 83, complain about the judges trying to rewrite the laws instead of enforcing them, has more than convinced me that, as a nation we are doomed unless the judiciary is turned to the right! GOOD NEWS!

Not arguing with your assessment of the judges, but some of them flip-flopped after their appointments. Big time! How does anyone predict that?

Oh gawd, in that case, maybe Bush should only appoint ultra-liberals and ignore the will of the voters for righty judges.

Hmm? You're right, that's unusual for the DMN to label as "Liberal" that which is Liberal. I checked and there isn't an e-mail address for the writer on the article. He may be a newbie with the DMN, and likely the editor was still on holiday?? LOL!

Ironically, Cornyn probably has more qualifications to sit on the Judiciary Committee than anyone else in the whole Senate. It's too bad he can't chair the committe instead of that old compromising Orrin G. Hatch.

If polar turnarounds were commonplace the whole judicial nomination wouldn't be any better than a crapshoot. I do not consider what was done by Justices Warren, Brennan(?) and Souter to have been simply a turnaround.
Sudden "revelations" of that magnitude leave me more than a little suspicious. I don't even suspect the presidents involved because they are, almost universally, at the mercy of their advisors, especially in the case of Eisenhower.

Judge me not by what I say but by what I do.

So be it, but you must admit that some leopards did change their spots.

I remember the "Impeach Warren" signs. That's all I remember about him.
