From my WWII desk calendar for January 3rd:

On this day in 1943, Allied forces report that they have retaken most of New Guinea, and the remaining Japanese resistance on the island is trapped in "hopeless" positions.

I love reading this. Question: did the disgusting, phlegmy-eyed, bulbous-nosed, bent one EVER sit down and eat with the troops? (Not that they would've wanted him there.)

Hooah

I believe 'huzzah' is the appropriate term. I've always found this a mysterious tradition, and sure enough Webster's lists its etymology as 'unknown'. But's it's a very old tradition in the army, a way for the ranks to pump up the officers (and themselves). Surely there are Freepers more knowledgeable than I on the subject.....

I thought this was the best part of his speech:

"In crucial hours, the success of our cause will depend upon you. As members of our military, you serve this nation's ideals and you demonstrate those ideals in your code and in your character. As Commander-in-Chief, I have come to know the men and women who wear America's uniform. I have seen your love of country and your devotion to a cause larger than yourself. I have seen your discipline, your idealism, and your sense of honor. I know that every order I give can bring a cost. I also know without a doubt that every order I give will be carried out with skill and unselfish courage.

"Some crucial hours may lie ahead. We know the challenges and the dangers we face. If this generation of Americans is ready, we accept the burden of leadership, we act in the cause of peace and freedom. And in that cause, we will prevail."

I hope you saw it. It was fabulous!

BTW, I pinged you on some Edwards' threads. Our worst fears realized. And I am living it LIVE here in Raleigh; the TV stations have gone 24/7.

I like that the President's going more into Iraq's threats towards our country and Israel, how they've taken it outside their borders before with their own history, their treatment of their own people who we'd supposedly harm in a conflict and the fact that Iraq is located in the region overrun by terrorists/threatening nations towards America-border by border where they move freely for the most part. He gave a great speech and it's always amazing to see the faces of the people who give so much to their country.

I hadn't refreshed my Comments page, so I missed the note that the speech would be replayed on CSpan! Interestingly, the article I read earlier today (can't remember where) said that the crowd was mostly silent during his speech. It seemed to me that the writer was trying to indicate that the President wasn't being well received. I immediately suspected some bias on the writer's part because I KNEW that they'd be hoo-ahing him during the whole speech!

I am sad that some of these brave young warriors might not come back home. We owe them a debt we can never repay. The war seems inevitable. Thank God that George W. Bush is the right man at the right time to lead this nation. He knows that they deserve the best training, the best equipment, and the best support.

From THIS THREAD comes my proudest moment as a FReeper ---

(Town Hall meeting in Ontario, CA on Jan. 5, 2002; broadcast on C-SPAN)

Yes, sir, back in the back.

Q First, sir, a message from the crew that just recently returned from the USS Enterprise. My son-in-law was aboard that. From the last man and woman on that crew, they are honored to call you their Commander in Chief. (Applause.)

Subject: Military Thank You Card
Subject: Military Thanks!

If you are so inclined, visit the Department of Defense web page below
and sign a brief message thanking the men and women of the U.S. military
services for defending our freedom. The compiled list of names will be
sent out to our soldiers at the end of the month. So far, there are
only about 1,400,000 names. What a shame.
There should be hundreds of millions of thank yous.
Pass the word that we can honor and support the defenders of freedom.

National Military Appreciation Month

takes 10 seconds...literally (please pass it on to your email friends)
