19-year-old charged with mom's death

12/31/2002

From Wire Reports

SUGAR LAND, Texas - A 19-year-old man has been charged with stabbing his mother to death after he was seen walking down a street with blood on his clothing, the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Department said Monday.

When authorities spotted and approached Anansi Flaherty on Sunday, they say, he confessed to killing his mother. The body of Vanessa Sweetman, 45, was later found with stab wounds in the home she shared with her son and husband.

Officials said Ms. Sweetman's husband had gone to run errands and wasn't home when she was killed. Authorities on Monday said their investigation was continuing.

The Sheriff's Department said Mr. Flaherty remained jailed Monday on a murder charge in Fort Bend County and his case would be referred to the district attorney's office.

Stupid kid's a Darwin Award Alert candidate. What is it about murderers walking around with blood-soaked shirts? He must have been in a daze when he killed his mother.

A 19-year-old man...

Isn't the media a hoot?  If this person had killed a police officer, it would have been "a 19-year-old boy...".  The kid's mistake is he killed an icon of our society.  Kill your father, friends, the pawn shop owner, a police officer, another child in a drive by and the liberal media will find a way to make you a sympathetic figure.  Why you're a mistreated child who we shouldn't be surprised would wind up like this.  Kill a mother or a teacher or a liberal and you're a "MAN" in full control of your faculties and evil I tell you, EVIL.

I suggest that the candle holding chanters will have their way before this is over.  On the dreary night when this kid recieves his dose of voltage, they'll have him sufficiently covered by every excuse in the book.  And the media will make sure their actions and views are prominantly presented.  "How could society turn on this poor soul in his hour of need?"

Usually boys who kill their mothers do it with knives, or other piercing weapons. It's Freud at work... (yes, this comment deserves it's very own barf alert)

Most likely a first schitzophrenic break. Right age and right behavior. Should be locked up for life.

If the kid was Schiztophrenic and not in charge of his faculties he shouldn't get the death penalty.

Most schizophrenics aren't paranoid or violent. In the majority of cases they can be helped with drugs and behavioral therapy. Its frightening though to live in world where you're haunted by delusions and ever present feelings of persecution. The film Beautiful Mind vividly illustrated what its likely to be mentally ill and we all envy the discipline of a John Nash in trying to deal with something that's so distracting it keeps you from being productive and able to make your loved ones understand how difficult it must be to do that which most people take for granted.

I betcha two bits he was on one or more mind-altering drugs (medications), i.e. Ritalin and prozak.

Many schizophrenics are paranoid. All are delusional. Most are not dangerous when in their most delusional state. Some are lethal.

I have thought that a guilty, mentally ill and too dangerous ...would be a another catagory for sentencing.

I haven't read or seen A Beautiful Mind, but I've nonetheless concluded that it's an irresponsible work. I've recently discovered that it has led otherwise rational people to believe that schizophrenics shouldn't be requireded to take medication as a condition for living independently outside an institution.

Schizophrenia is a degenerative disease, and people cannot think or self-discipline their way around its horrible consequences. They may get away with it for a while, but eventually either they or someone else will pay a horrible price.

Taking an extremely atypical case like John Nash, and using it to promote an agenda which will harm many many more people than it helps is the height of irresponsibility. It's comparable to taking a "miracle" case of a deadly cancer which somehow disappeared on its own, and using this to suggest to people that forgoing surgery, chemotherapy, etc. in favor of just "positive thinking" is a reasonable course of action.

Even in their delusional (as opposed to paraniod) states, they are quite dangerous to themselves.

i.e. Ritalin

Three cheers for the dumbest remark I have heard all day.

Do you know ANYTHING about Ritalin? My son took Ritalin for a few years when he was younger and managed not to kill anyone, go figure!!??!!

Yea, go figure, keep him doped up with stimulants all day. Did you even read the links I posted where a more level-headed and less hysterical resoning was presented.

Yea, go figure, keep him doped up with stimulants all day.

Did you read the post? I said years ago. It was very effective and he quit taking it when he felt that he was ready.

Did you even read the links I posted where a more level-headed and less hysterical resoning (sic) was presented.

No, you see I have real experience. Reading other people's "hysterical" opinions is nothing like being there. Would you postulate that reading about the war in Viet Nam is the equivalent to having been there? Do you think that a Veteran would change his mind about his experiences in a war because of something somebody else wrote? You state that I am not "level-headed". How would know? You don't know my son or me. Further, my daughter wasn't ADHD so we didn't keep her "doped up all day".

This is a bit of an issue with me in that the majority opinion against Ritalin is held by people who really know nothing about it. Dr. Coleus, reserve your opinion until you have true experience.

Right, while he was taking his Schedule IV drug, he took them all DAY, yes, as you said, for a few years, all day for a few years. And I guess he was born with a Ritalin deficiency and took it until his deficiency was fulfilled, sure.

The problem is that many children need more attention from their parents and not mind-altering drugs, some kids need a mother at home or need to be home schooled and not drugged up. Some kids need to have their food allergies ferreted out with parents who take the initiative. Some kids are allergic to chemicals and additives in foods and some are fed too many processed foods and sugar.

And yes, ALL of the school shooters were either on Ritalin or both Ritalin and Prozac. None were drug free. And yes, 50 yrs. ago we had guns in the homes, guns in schools (Rifle shooting clubs) and nobody was killed by emotionally disturbed individuals. Kids did not murder their classmates and parents.

My original comment was not an attack on you or your son, maybe you have something to feel guilty about, I don't know.

and at times to others...remember the woman in Texas who drowned her five chidren. She was significantly delusional at the time.

Post all the "hysterical" links that you want, I don't read them because I have REAL experience. You did not address the issue of experience over conjecture. You did not because you cannot effectively do so.

, maybe you have something to feel guilty about, I don't know.

You are finally right about something. You don't know.

Perhaps you should repeat that phrase whenever you go into Doctor mode.
