SALE OR NOT TO SALE
Vanity | 26 December 2002

Posted on 12/26/2002 6:43:38 AM PST by MeneMeneTekelUpharsin

Just got info from wife who heard it at work from someone who talked to someone who knows. Wal-Mart is only putting crafts and Christmas items on sale today. Not much else on sale. Anyone have any other info on other stores like K-Mart, Target? Perhaps we can help each other target REAL sales when they happen.

And, if sales WERE the lowest they've been in 30 years as the Washington Post story says...seems like the retailers would have big sales. However, from what I know (which is very little), they're not. Merry Christmas to all.

The know the week after is a big sales period, mostly we'll see sucker plays this week. The big discounts should come after the first of the year.

Down here in Lafayette, La. (howdy, neighbor!) I've had the TV on all morning, And I haven't heard a peep about sales today at the local stores. My wife plans to make a run at it later this afternoon, but I won't be there, I have to drive to Galveston today. Any idea what the post holiday traffic is like in the Houston/Galveston area?

North Dakota has been left out of the "sales". No advertisements in the paper, no Pre-New Years sales, just Christmas decorations offered right now......

Note: This is the biggest shopping day of the year traffic-wise. More people will be in the stores than at any time.

The super-sales (Door-busters, Major sales) are usually lures to get people into the stores, where they then buy things that are not on sale; thus boosting the bottom line. Given the weak 'Christmas Sales', I think that a lot of stores simply can't afford the major (ie loose money on an item) sale. I would expect significant drops on seasonal (Christmas lights, paper, candy) this week, and winter clothing starting to get marked down around mid-Jan.

I was in my local WM early Tuesday morning - when there are few customers and shelves are being restocked. Over the intercom, the manager (?) announced that the store had met its goals for the week, and congratulated the employees. Everywhere I went, there were plenty of people.

What could possibly be so good that it's worth standing in line outside a Walmart at 6:00am?

Changing the subject, but I went into the local Jo-anne's (fabric store)a few days before Christmas to pick up some fabric (duh!) and was stunned to find "Holiday" fabric already marked 50% off and bolts of valentine fabric already predominatly displayed!

Yup, nothing like buying valentine stuff the third week of December to beat the rush.

Oh no... Valentine's Day already! That also means there are only 364 shopping days left until Christmas!

sales WERE the lowest they've been in 30 years as the Washington Post story says

The story also says that sales are actually up 1.5% over last year. In other words this is the smallest gain in 30 years - not the poorest sales in 30 years. In a year like this 1.5% increase looks pretty good to me.

Only the WP, the primary shill for the DNC, would say that an increase is really a loss. Sounds like the Gingrich mediscare "cuts" to me.

The local Safeway has reduced the prices of old bread to 25% and nearly expired meat to 30%. The week old sushi is 1/2 off too!
