Also, tied to this, but not mentioned is the immediate departure of mary matalin from the White House.

Once Carvilles hand in this had been exposed her departure makes alot more sense.

I'm trying not become emotional about these developments but I'm having really ugly sensations provoked by comments made by Spike Lee, Jesse Jackson, and others...to include my president. Senator Lott has made it known, that if he were to step down from the Senate Leadership position that he would leave the Senate.

Lott is a self centered, first class SOB who is showing that he is willing to destroy any chance of advancing his party's agenda for at least the next two years. He will treat his own party this way but will crawl sniveling to the Rats for permission to wipe the dog crap from their shoes.

Your analysis is incorrect.

1. Lott has said he will not resign from the Senate.

2. Even if he did resign from the Senate, Mississippi must hold an election for a replacement within 90 days. The republican candidate is the overwhelming favorite, as long as he can walk and chew gum at the same time.

3. Assume an interim dem replacement for that 90 days. The senate is still 50-50 and ties are broken with the Vice PResident's vote. We win.

4. So, will Lincoln Chaffee jump ship because of an interim dem replacement for Lott? He would be crazy to do so. We will likely take back the senate in 90 days and he loses his chairmanship because he is no longer with the majority. Plus, the dems will have a very rough time taking the Senate in 2004. Why would he jump ship to a likely minority party in two years?

The reality here is that any way this plays out, the Republicans are likely to keep control of the Senate. Now look at the 'other hand.'

Let's say we give into our fears and keep Lott as SML. Do you think that America would be a better place had Thurmond's Dixiecrats run the country since 1948? Their main platform was segregation now, segregation forever. Real segregation enforced by law.

I for one do not think so. I do not want my party lead by a man who says that he thinks the Dixiecrats being elected would be a peachy idea. Not only is that statement immoral. It is incredibly stupid for him to have done so in front of CSPAN cameras. Had he given this a moment's thought, he would have understood just how stupid that statement would sound.

Either he is a rascist. Or he is very, very stupid. Neither is acceptable in a SML for the Republicans.

Don't blame this on the dems. They can no more resist race-baiting than can a junkie resist a loaded needle. Lott knows that and opened his mouth anyway. Lott has only himself to blame for this fiasco.

I am constantly amazed when FReepers are incredulous that the Dems would stoop so low. They are at WAR with us. They will stop at nothing. They have no scruples. They will lie, they will cheat, they will commit voter fraud, they will drag people through the mud, ...in short they will do whatever it takes to remove your freedom.

The Republican's biggest mistake is playing by the rules. This reminds me of when Clinton was nailing everything in sight and Gingrich and Livingston (sp?) resigned. Lott should have said "I will resign as ML as soon as Byrd leaves the Senate, Clinton apologizes for his Fullbright (sp?) comments, and Jackson explain his hymietown comments. Until then you can all kiss my Mississipi white snake". Unfortunately he is a wuss and is incapable of disproportionate retaliation which is the only thing that stops bullies.

Why is there an assumption or belief by both the Media and Democrats that that Republicans will do what is Morally Right and Honest? Am I missing something in the "Morale High Ground Department" as I feel the only fallout from this whole eposide is to have the Democrats try to revive thier membership who have jumped ship on "morale grounds" and bring them back by making Republican's all look bad.

Lott must stay. The Country voted twice, in 2000 and now 2002, to give Republicans a chance to move the Country forward and away from the Clinton Politics of Personal Destruction. It is up to the Republican Leadership (Read LOTT included) to not cave in to precieved "Morale" errosion from a Political Party devoid of both integrity and honor. We owe them nothing that did not earn at the voting booth!

Trent Lott is a f***ing idiot for putting us in this situation. If he had any sense of duty to his party he would resign as Senate Majority Leader TODAY and shut the he** up and stop apologizing for every perceived sin under the sun.

It doesn't matter any more that his remarks were merely stupid (which they were) but innocuous. It's gotten too big to take them back. He hung himself and gave the race industry fodder for the next year if not longer.

Step aside Trent for Frist or Nickles or Tancredo. Keep quiet and maybe you'll be able to hold onto your seat in the next Mississippi senatorial election. But your days in a leadership position of the party are OVER.

As to the hypocrisy of the Other Side in this one-sided debate, that's a separate issue that the Pubbies need to start fighting, i.e., which is the party of segragation

The problem is Lott. He will rather resign and screw his own party instead of sucking it up and being a normal Senator for two years. Lott knew what he was saying when he said it. He should of known what the respose would have been. To claim that things would have been better if a known racist was president, was either done on purpose or it was done out of stupidity. Either way Lott should realize that he cannot lead the Republicans any more. He has given his own party a no win scenario, which means he could care less about them. Either the Republicans limp along with a damaged leader in the Senate or Lott will make sure the Democrats control the Senate.

I don't buy this. Moderates like Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins have tremendous respect for President Bush. His public statements against Lott the other day stunned the liberals. I even heard Mario Cuomo call Bush "a different kind of Republican" on Hardball, much to my surprise.
