I agree with your post. He's doing a nice job defending himself and making amends for any misperceptions.

As much as I'd like to see Lott replaced as Majority Leader, the controversy over this statement shouldn't be the thing that ousts him.

Sheets *was* Majority Leader in the Senate and is constantly gushingly referred to as "The Conscience of the Senate." And because he senilely waves his little copy of the Constitution in the air (I have the same one and sometimes wave it back when I see him do it on C-SPAM), they bow down and call him a constitutional guru.

Sheets was also President Pro Tempore of the Senate for the past year and a half.

I'm no big fan of Lott..I didn't like what he didn't do during impeachment and I certainly didn't like the "power sharing" nonsense with the democRATs. Agree or not, like it or not, the Republican caucas reelected Lott. Probably to keep the more moderate/liberal Republicans on our side of the isle.

But, this is not fair. This is painful to watch because even if he is too accomodating, he is not a racist.

I tend to dispise anyone who uses the "r" word. It's cheap, it's painful, and 9 our of 10 times untrue.

Maybe Lott will resign his leadership position for "family reasons" in the months to come. But, I sure hope we don't allow ourselves to be held hostage to this bs any longer.

Oh, let's see, conspiring to turn a serious attempt to impeach a felonious and traitorous President into a show trial farce, rolling over to create an unnecessary "power-sharing" arrangement that hamstrung GWB's domestic agenda for months until Lott bungled EVEN THAT and let Jeffords defect. He's damaged goods who HAS damaged the country.

Count on it. Because if Lott weathers this storm, it will be for the benefit of two things: Chester Trent Lott and his ass, and for nothing else. It will damage the Party, endanger our majority, and give us two more years of this numskull's non-leadership. Damn right we'll keep screaming.

3. BECAUSE HE'S NOT THE MAJORITY LEADER OF THE SENATE!

Lott may resign in a couple of months....ending the "blackmail". I just don't want him to go now---under these absurd and hateful conditions.

(Besides, the blackmail will have to get past the President...I almost want to wish the blackmailers good luck :) )
