I agree with your post. He's doing a nice job defending himself and making amends for any misperceptions.

As much as I'd like to see Lott replaced as Majority Leader, the controversy over this statement shouldn't be the thing that ousts him.

All due respect, but this smacks too much of the old liberal shibboleth that "Clinton's enemies couldn't get him on Whitewater, so they're trying to bust him on Monica". People on FR, if not elsewhere, understood that Monica, Whitewater, Waco, etc. were simply different facets of the consequences of having a horror that was a sociopathic President. It never should have surprised anyone that with lying about real estate deals comes lying about adultery.

Likewise, only naive ones would think that lousy, quisling-like "leadership" of the GOP caucus and putting your foot in your mouth big time aren't just different sides of the same counterfeit coin.

Bull to misperceptions, poor choice of words, and the like. His words clearly reveal ugly sentiments. All this Byrd, Condit, Hillary, etc. equivalency excuse-making can not obscure this fundamental fact. Those who trivialize Lott's words should read conservative black columnist Thomas Sowell's description of the indignities he personally suffered as a Marine during the Korean War from segregated public facilities. For Lott to continue to serve as senate majority leader will be immensely hurtful to the Republican Party.
