I understand you, really, truly and honestly I do.

And if it had been a one time thing, I'd agree.

The bad thing is that he is a Senator, and knows what this history is - and said it anyway, not thinking about it. In my book, to say it and not care makes him either bindingly stupid or a racist - there is no third option. And my money is on him harboring some deep seated junk.

Should we have jettisoned Strom ages ago? You bet. We pay that price now, of all times.

I don't think he should quit the Senate - we need the votes - but he is a limping duck, I'd be willing to wager - and distance isn't bad.

Sorry - doesn't mean I'm any less fond of ya.

And I agree with you. What Bush said yesterday was more damaging to Republicans than what Lott said. Bush expects loyalty from those he works with, so he should also be expected to be loyal to those who work with him.

I am still amazed that so many in the Bush admin can not see the bigger picture. Perhaps they are blinded by this 'new tone in Washington' crap. Well take off the f'in blinders, Dubya, and welcome to the real world of politics.

Now those of you who dislike Lott can ride this issue to Lott's demise. But I for one am not going to let the Democrats continue to foster the completely false stereotype that Republicans are racist.

The biggest, most effective weapon of the extreme leftist, socialist, and liberal screw worms, is the word "racist and racism" And they use this weapon routinely, at will, on anyone that does not agree with their agendas. It's truly the weapon of choice.

That's fine, CP. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, nor do I agree with everyone.

You're still ok in my book too. ;)

But the larger issue beyond Lott still needs to be addressed. The Dems know that everytime they bring a charge such as this, Republicans will cave. Newt. Livingston. And now Lott. This has got to stop. Period.

McConnell would not be a good choice. Have you ever seen him on the news shows? He has a hard edge and does not come across as compasionate or sympathatic. Frist might be better, plus he is a medical doctor. People still have a good deal of respect for doctors. Nickles doesn't come across as being too bright.

You are correct. And it's a weapon because we stand back and let it kill us everytime.

Republicans need to put on the kevlar and get a bigger gun.

From Associated Press (EXCERPT):

"Senate Republican leader Trent Lott tried to help Bob Jones University keep its federal tax-exempt status despite the school's policy prohibiting interracial dating two decades before his recent comments stirred a race controversy.

"Racial discrimination does not always violate public policy," Lott, then a congressman from Mississippi, wrote in a 1981 friend of the court brief that unsuccessfully urged the U.S. Supreme Court to stop the Internal Revenue Service from stripping the university's tax exemption.

you're standing with Bob Herbert and Little Tom Daschle and Jumping Jim Jeffords.

Herbert and Daschle both think Lott's remarks were meant to be racist. I don't.

Jeffords WORKS with Trent Lott; you sure as hell don't. McCain does too, and he was shocked to think anybody would think Trent Lott is a racist.

Why does Trent Lott get more black votes than any other Senator from the South?

How has Trent Lott's voting record reflected racism?

What has Trent Lott DONE that reflects racism.

Words are one thing, actions another.

If you saw the original tape....everyone in the rotunda laughed when Lott said that Mississippi suported Strom....when Lott continued with the now infamous comments, there was dead silence....everyone in the hall knew it was wrong....except Lott....he's gotta go..

"But make no mistake. If Lott resigns, he might as well put on a white hood because it will appear to be an admittion of being a racist. This is far more complex than Lott being inept. And it pisses me off that so few Republicans don't see it"

Me too....however, lefty reporters are asking today if WHY the president took "so long" to to address Lott's remarks, and demanding to know when the PRESIDENT is going to come out and make a statement...

There you have it folks: the lefties have already dropped Lott...and are going for the throat of one of the most popular and principled presidents in US history....next up: Algore (or Hillary or Daschle) in '04.

Right media brining up Kennedy taking about his 'mentor'...a segregationalist...and mentioning the double standard. Well, that's something at least.

I'm asking and I ask for forebearance and forgiveness as I grow and learn from my mistakes.

Strom Thurmond: it was a lighthearted affair, I apologize for my choice of words.

By the time I got to know [Strom] he had repudiated those views...I apologize for opening old wounds

This is a NO WIN situation. No matter what he says or does...THEY have the agenda set..if he grovels and crys..he will be weak..if he is doing the "ME ME ME " like right now....he will be unrepentent.

There is no stopping the Democrats..the teeth are sinking in..the parody has begun, the R's are SILENT, and Lott is appearing very aloof. HE DIDN'T MEAN WHAT THEY ACCUSE HIM OF.....no way!!

But NOTHING he says or does will make a difference....

THEY ARE GOING TO FRY HIM !! Right now at the conference, he is doing a Political Speech !! With a smile on his face!

Toast...he is toast. This country needs to wise up...and Jesse......KEEP RACISM ALIVE ! IT IS YOUR HOPE!!

Bob Jones University is a private college who can do what they want. Bob Jones University did not ban blacks or any minorities from enrolling and attending nor did they discriminate against blacks or other minorities. Their interracial dating policy effected everyone of all races equally. Lott was correct when he said "Racial discrimination does not always violate public policy." There is nothing untrue about his statement.

I can't stand defending a spineless RINO like Trent Lott, but this racism crap is just stupid. It is disgusting that Republicans are teaming up with the Democrat dirtbags to destroy Lott over an alleged ThoughtCrime. Knock this crap off or it will come back to haunt everyone one of us as the race-baiters and other leftist scum are empowered and their weapon of choice becomes more potent.

Great article. Thanks!! It could be that Sen. Levins comments were in Sept. But regardless, like Mark Levin says.. "where is the outrage?" for Sen. Levins remarks?
