"Isn't it interesting that Lott has said what he 'didn't' mean, but given opportunity after opportunity, he has never explained what he 'did' mean??"...Probably because the only explanation he could give the public - besides saying something like "well, I AM a racial bigot" - is to say that he didn't really mean anything...that his comments were a terminally stupid, lamebrain attempt at wit by by an individual (him) not intellectually equipped to win a battle of wits with a houseplant. Now THAT would be a forceful and definitive explanation of his actions.
If he stands up there and says he made a "mistake" by saying those things, or that he "doesn't recall" why he made those stupid remarks...or that he got so plastered that he doesn't remember WHAT he said...he'd better quietly step down as majority non-leader by the time the senate reconvenes.
He might be an ok senator for his constituents, and that's fine for his constituents...but as a majority leader who affects the image of his party and reflects so poorly on the administration which is struggling with massive terrorism and a flat in the artificial tech bubble, Lott has been a miserable failure.

In 1911 Truman (who was 27) wrote to his future wife, Bess: "I think one man is just as good as another so long as he's honest and decent and not a nigger or a Chinaman. Uncle Will [probably Wfiliam Yount, the brother of Truman's mother] says that the Lord made a white man from dust, a nigger from mud, then He threw up what was left and it came down a Chinaman." Truman continued: "[I] am strongly of the opinion Negroes ought to be in Africa, yellow men in Asia and white men in Europe and America."

That the Dixiecrats were all about opposing Truman's civil rights program and nothing else separate from the Democrat platform? They were bigoted Democrats-- that's all (thus, the name-- Dixiecrats). The party wasn't founded on support for a flat tax.

Why couldn't he have been a loyal Republican and said he supported Dewey in '48?
You are, of course, begging the question of whether Lott has **ever** been a loyal Republican. His record to date would not indicate that. Krauthammer was right the other day when he said that there is no GOP principle or even parliamentary advantage that Lott would not throw overboard if it meant some federal pork for building a bridge in Mississippi.
There WAS a state GOP in Mississippi in 1948, however small or impotent. Dewey got 2.5% of the vote in MS in '48, a little more in '44, I believe. He is still one of the greatest Presidents we never had, and Lott should be a good Republican and keep Tom Dewey's banner flying.
By the way, I've been checking Thurmond's '48 vote totals outside of Dixie as a result of this affair. Dewey did better in the deep South than Strom did outside of Jim Crow-land. Strom was certainly on the ballot in *some* northern and western places. He got a whopping 7, yes, seven votes in conservative New Hampshire, and 42 in Confederate-sympathetic Missouri. You may say that those were write-ins, but he got 1228 votes in California and 374 in North Dakota, so he was probably on the ballot there. Outside the Old Confederacy, the only states where he got over 2000 votes were Maryland and Kentucky. Check out:

FACT: When Trent Lott was in college, he lead the fight to keep blacks out of his fraternity.Isn't there an all black college that no whites can attend?
I can't think of its name right now.

And your proof that he was referring to the segregationist plank specifically is what exactly?
Because segregation wasn't a _plank_ in the Dixiecrat platform. LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY, OKAY? Segregation was whole effing platform itself.

Thus sayeth TLBSHOW:
"Thomas Sowell, or Armstrong Williams. ARE DEMOCRAT HELPERS AND FOOLS" ..Mark Twain once said: "Better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."
Wise words to heed Friend.
Take care... F.B.D.

Rush says the rats won't pull this off. I am afraid the right is the real problem! Wrong.
The problem is Trent Lott, the left and the media (sorry to repeat myself like that).
'The right' is being consistent and principled...and if the right is listened to for once, problems like this can be avoided in the future.

Great find, BTW.

The Dems have no business in dealing with this. Lott is ours to deal with.

"It's funny how some posts on this thread suggest that this is all some Democrat plot and we can't "let them win". As if it's the cleverness of the Democrats that made Trent Lott say those idiotic things. It's on the same level as the DU types who claim Paul Wellstone's "memorial service" was a Republican plot." Yup, the way to fix this one is to NOT emulate the Dimocrats. Stay strong by going on principle.
Check out TBLSHOWS comments...definitely tinfoil hat material...

I hope Trent Lott walks out to the podium and announces he has only one thing to say, Then he steps to the right of the podium, turns around and drops his pants, bends over and shines them the moon. LOL. That would say more than he has said thus far.
