Ex-Cowboy Newton gets 5 years for drug possession

12/10/2002

From Staff and Wire Reports

ST. MARTINVILLE, La. - Former Dallas Cowboys offensive lineman Nate Newton, already serving a federal drug sentence in Texas, was sentenced to five years in prison Monday for possession of 213 pounds of marijuana in Louisiana.

Judge Don Hernandez initially tried to suspend all but 30 months of Mr. Newton's sentence but changed his mind after prosecutors said the mandatory minimum sentence was five years. Prosecutors had argued for a sentence of 15 to 20 years.

Judge Hernandez told Mr. Newton that he could still be a positive role model for children and for his fans.

"I will be. I promise you that," Mr. Newton said.

Mr. Newton also received a $50,000 fine.

He is serving a 30-month federal sentence on a drug-trafficking charge and could finish it in 19 months. Mr. Newton pleaded guilty in April to the charge in federal court in Dallas as part of a plea agreement.

Mr. Newton, 40, was free on bail from the Louisiana arrest when authorities stopped him in Ellis County on Dec. 12. They found $10,000 in his red pickup and 175 pounds of marijuana in the trunk of an accompanying car driven by a Garland man.

He will serve his Louisiana sentence concurrently with the federal sentence.

Mr. Newton's Louisiana arrest came in November 2001, after he and two women were pulled over for a traffic violation on Interstate 10 in St. Martin Parish. Mr. Newton and the others were accused of hauling the marijuana with plans to sell it.

Mr. Newton is a six-time Pro Bowl offensive lineman. He spent 14 seasons in the NFL, 13 of those with Dallas. He retired in 2000 after a season with Carolina.

Ah. You can take the boy out of the ghetto,....but you can't get the ghetto out of the boy.

All the fame in fortune in the world and losers are still losers. Mike Tyson comes to mind.

If the judge had his way, therefore, ole Nate would not have served one additional day for the new crime.
And why do you think that's so Bob? You think it could have something to do with "The Cult of Personality"?
Good for the goose, but not for the gander.

You guys crack me up with your...
It was for medicinal purposes.
and
That must be some serious case of glaucoma?
...comments.
What a farce!
We pretty much all recognize that marijuana is a recreational drug as well as a medicinal drug, yet you two, among others, want to paint your own picture and what an illusion it is too.
I've yet to find any medicinal benefit for alcohol. Maybe ya'll can help me...
Also, I don't recall the man ever saying he used marijuana for medicinal purposes.

What did he "do" to his wife and kids? I don't see any crime against them.

I didn't say anything about a crime. He's embarassed the hell out of them. The kids go to the same school my kids went to before I began homeschooling. I'd see Nate when he would come to school functions. It was really something to see how big he really is. Everyone was proud of him. Now he's nothing more than a convict.

there has always been a medical use for alcohol... it sterilized everything, and they still wipe it on your arm before innoculations...
and with and for cooking, alcohol has great gastrointestinal benefits!

Another sterling example of a Dallas Cowboy with a drug problem.

More a "lack of brains" problem, it pervades the Cowboys, even to their current head coach.

Aside from sterilization, they say a glass of wine a day is good for your heart.

Beebe had set up a new business, House of Speed in 2000. Working with Dr. Jeff Schutt, a chiropractor and rehabilitation specialist, Beebe began offering speed clinics, first in Illinois and eventually around the country

Beebe had set up a new business, House of Speed...

Unfortunate name, given the context of the thread.

In Defense of Nate,

Nate is a good guy and never let his fame go to his head. It is said that he pushed Neon Deon around a few times for acting like the jerk he is.

During the 92 election, Nate apparently told his Mom to vote for President Bush. She asked why, to which Nate replied, "cuz Clinton's gonna tax my black ass to hell." lol Who knows, given his conservative views, Nate might even be a fellow freeper.

Also, i thought a few of us freepers were libertarians. Spare me the self righteous drivel about marijuana (no i've never used it). Seems to me the issue is more about the gubmint controlling our lives.

On a football team full of self centered ego maniacs (including the coach-who Nate also didn't get along with) Nate was one of the stars who was a team player ...and a decent guy. The NFL could use a few more Nate Newtons.

You know, I'm kind of tired of people jumping on Mike Tyson also. Tyson has a gift which enabled him to acheive a decent standard of living.

Unfortunately Tyson is not the smartest guy in the world. I think he was taken advantage of by Don King and all those mercurial nasty women...like Robin Givens.

the rape charge in Indiana was a sham. Make a big deal of going up to his hotel room late at night. In my opinion, the woman just wanted to extort money from Mike Tyson in exchange for silence.
