I had been under the impression that Maher had earlier admitted starting the fire, but only for the purpose of triggering the alarm so that security and the police would come to Safra's aid (against the assassins).
I believe that may have been one of his early versions of what happened. He then admitted that there were, in fact, no assassins, and that he cut himself to make it look like he had been attacked. One of the reasons the cops took so long to get to Safra (in addition to Safra's own paranoia and the cops own bungling) is that the cops thought there were assassins somewhere in the building. So not only did Maher start the fire that killed Safra and the other nurse, his report to the responding cops about assassins slowed down any possible rescue.

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends.

How does Monacos courts comapre to ours? How long to we have prisoners sit in cells until their trial. Granted, 3 yrs is a long time, but is there a possibility he committed the crime and is guilty?

Show me the EXACT post where I compared his experience to a POW's. Post 371, to wit:
(strela) 'That's an insult to every American POW who honored the Code of Conduct "
(68-69 ...)You forget Nixon changed those rules. At least be knowledgeable about what the rules are after Viet Nam.
By the way, I was the one who brought up the American POW comparison in that particular case, because Maher was allegedly in the Special Forces and should have presumably received training in resistance to "torture." You're the one who hopped down that particular irrelevant rabbit trail about Nixon and "the rules" in Viet Nam, presumably in an attempt to muddy the waters and confuse other participants in this thread. If you weren't attempting to equate Maher favorably with US POWs, then what WERE you trying to do?
That's the danger of throwing non sequiturs out there like you seem to enjoy doing; no one understands what the hell you are going on about. I know now that you're a big source for non sequitur and I won't let you pull me down a rabbit trail again in this discussion. Either keep up or find another discussion.

If you can figure out what I wrote in 403 through all the typos, etc., please tell me what I tried to say! Man, this cold medicine is butt kicking.

"He is a former Special Forces medic."
Thanks for the info, sneakypete; didn't know his military background.

Thanks, but I think that instead of those "answers," I'll go with the ones given by Ted Maher himself in open court last week, as related by an Associated Press reporter who was in the courtoom:
An American nurse who has confessed to setting a blaze that killed his billionaire employer said in a Monaco court Friday that he never expected the fire to rage out of control. At the second day of his trial, Ted Maher indicated the fire was part of a bizarre plan to ingratiate himself with Edmond Safra, his wealthy employer. Maher testified that he started the fire, then stabbed himself - convinced he would emerge the hero who rushed his employer to safety while fending off attackers. Safra and Torrente suffocated in the smoke-filled bathroom where they sought refuge.

Perhaps you'd be interested in the words of a civil action now brought:
The mom "also had bruises on her knees and Mr. Safra's DNA under her fingernails," the suit says. Both died of asphyxiation. McCallion said the autopsy report was "inconclusive" as to whether she was asphyxiated by the smoke or by Safra putting her in a choke hold.
They're at post number ##2246.
To: nicmarlo
And why was Safra restraining her? Let's go to post #2245 and read about it: The siblings court papers say an autopsy report disclosed combat-like marks on their mothers neck and blood in her thyroid gland, indicating that Mr. Safra restrained her and prevented her escape while the bathroom filled with smoke from a fire set by another nurse.
Don't try to pretend that the siblings absolve Ted Maher from his responsibility for having set the fire. I'm sure if he had a billion bucks his name would be in the lawsuit as well.

I find it quite odd that children of the deceased were not provided information concerning their mother's death....and I find it more than odd that lots of things "convenient" were not allowed to be brought up at trial, i.e., DNA under the fingernails, etc......surely that kind of scientific evidence would be important if you want to know who it was that the person had touched just before death. I mean, it's not like we carry DNA under our fingernails for the past month...people do wash their hands.
To: drjimmy
There's also other DNA that was not allowed in trial, i.e., the blood stains on the chair....gee, I wonder that might not have become evidence. Oh, I know, people normally have lots of blood on their furniture. /sarcasm

Oh, yes....the money....let's see, the Safra Will was changed shortly before his death. Let's see, who was the beneficiary? Oh, yes, the "poor widow" Lily, the very same who collected on her previous two husbands' deaths.
But, yes, let's assume the children have a motivation to sue, but Safra's widow had no motivation, whatsoever, to have her husband killed. I mean, the fact that NO INVESTIGATION into HER background must be "prima facie" evidence she's innocent (even though that's not what is done in any country where justice is sought). Gee, wilickers, that's kewl detective work there, by you and the Monaco po-lice.
To: nicmarlo
The wife and the bodyguard! That is did it. With her money she had him killed! That is my guess. Any idea who she is after now?

Any idea who she is after now? She's probably doing her investigative "accounting" on the next victim, er I mean, husband.
To: nicmarlo
It would be interesting to know who the next victim is.
