GAYS have had the word homosexual banned by the Government because they say it is offensive.
Ministers want it written out of their vocabulary after complaints that it was outdated.
Instead they will refer to those with an “orientation towards people of the same sex”.
Homosexual, coined 130 years ago, will be ditched under anti-discrimination laws drawn up by equality minister Barbara Roche.
Whitehall officials will be told not to use the term in official documents, speeches, press releases or white papers.
Last night a spokesman for Mrs Roche, 48, denied the move was political correctness.
He said: “There was a strong feeling that homosexual wasn’t the way forward in defining sexual orientation. There were various concerns.”
Gays’ objection to the word homosexual was revealed while mum-of-one Mrs Roche was doing a consultation exercise last year.
The paper, called Towards Equality and Diversity, contained the Government’s plans to tackle sexual and religious discrimination.
For decades homosexual was regarded as a non-discriminatory alternative to words like queer, fairy and poof.
But since gay took over as the most popular description in the 1960s, homosexual is seen by some as a term of abuse.
"Homosexual" is neutral, scientific. I can't say I've heard it used in the same pejorative way as "poofter" is used.
They're getting worked up over nothing, darling. Language debates like this usually do more damage to those who are complaining about it.

...And there is the lie! Homosexuality is inherently wrong, because human nature testifies against it's natural order. What homo's and people who have the same thought process that you express have is, you totally disregard the SELFISH EVIL DESIRE that's inherent within.
Homosexuality effects every one of us because it perpetuates the self-serving perverted desire of men and women...which is the proponate of evil. People who have a concentration that zero's in on their contorted sexual dalliances whether it be homosexual or adultrous actions or some other preverted activity are doing nothing more than catering to self-centerness that is depraved.
Same sex not only affects us all, but it effects all of society negatively because it's emphasis on self-aggrandizement leads down the road to degradation.
People who desire relations with the same sex have been nothing more than duped into believing that "their" desire to lay with someone of the same sex is a good thing for THEM, and that's ALL that matters.
Whew! I was glad to see that it was you who posted this Ivan. The above phrase gave me a start, since there was no solid geographical reference or dateline in the article. I was wondering when the hell the United States had allowed for the appointing of an "Equality Minister".

Did you know it is now recommended for homosexuals to get annual anal pap smears due to their increased chances of anal cancers? "Nothing inherently wrong" indeed!
Replace one scientifically accurate word with seven words? Did dickens (paid by the word for his novels) come up with this one?
Well there is only one appropriate word for the people who came up with this change - "idiots".
