Disastrous Wellstone Service Analyzed

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - In hindsight, their first mistake may have been holding a memorial service in a big basketball arena.

Under a bank of Jumbotron screens.

Live on C-Span.

The Oct. 29 service held for Sen. Paul Wellstone after he was killed in a plane crash turned into a raucous political pep rally that turned off many voters. Some analysts say it not only led to the defeat of Wellstone stand-in Walter Mondale but also may have contributed to the Democrats' setbacks nationally.

In studying the anatomy of a debacle, many critics have focused on the blunt-edged speech of Wellstone's close friend Rick Kahn. But the event was designed from the start to be boisterous and, yes, political.

"The problem was the labeling," said Kathleen Hall Jamieson, dean of the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. "The mistake was in labeling this as a memorial instead of a celebration of the lives of these individuals, which is what it was."

She said people tuned in expecting a funeral and instead got a rally.

Others said that holding the event in a sports arena that seats nearly 15,000 all but predetermined the tone.

"To expect that 15- or 20,000 Wellstone supporters would be quiet as pictures of Trent Lott and others flashed on the screen was too much to expect," said Steve Smith, director of the Weidenbaum Center on the Economy, Government and Public Policy at Washington University in St. Louis.

The crowd's booing of Lott was difficult to hear on television but obvious to reporters there. The event was featured prominently on the national news, and conservative pundits seized on the spectacle.

"The problem here was that this was an event controlled by a family that was grieving and a campaign staff that was no longer in the campaign," Smith said. "So, there were errors in judgment."

Wellstone campaign manager Jeff Blodgett apologized for the event the next morning but declined to revisit it in a recent interview, saying: "We've paid the price for the memorial many times over. We're moving on."

The event almost happened in an entirely different way.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a source familiar with the planning meeting the day after Wellstone died said the small group considered holding the service in a more somber setting such as a cathedral. But that idea was rejected for a variety of reasons.

One reason was that the senator was Jewish. But organizers also believed that any tribute to Wellstone had to reflect the populist bent of the man. Thus the big arena.

To those paying close attention, the intent of the memorial was clear in the advertised theme: "Stand up, keep fighting."

During the event, Wellstone's wife, daughter and three campaign staffers were given tearful eulogies. But when Kahn, chosen by sons Mark and David to speak of their father, took the podium, he almost immediately changed the tone.

"We are begging you to help us win this election for Paul Wellstone," he told the crowd. "We can redeem the sacrifice of his life if you help us win this election for Paul Wellstone." Kahn also singled out some Republican lawmakers in the crowd to ask them to honor Wellstone by supporting a Democrat for his seat.

Mark Wellstone spoke later and started a finger-jabbing chant of "We will win!" When the video monitors in the arena focused on Mondale, then Wellstone's presumed replacement, the crowd began chanting, "Fritz!"

Democratic National Committee (news - web sites) Chairman Terry McAuliffe recently told a group of editorial writers that the big-screen close-ups were the biggest mistake of the event, which he said could have cost Democrats nationwide.

Afterward, the event's organizers were in shock, one person present said, and some immediately realized it was a public relations disaster.

Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura, a political independent, said the very next morning that he was so disgusted he walked out. Republican challenger Norm Coleman was essentially given a fresh start.

"Up until the event, the Coleman people were scared out of their minds," said GOP strategist Sarah Janecek.

Neither Kahn nor the Wellstone brothers would comment for this story. But Kahn said in a radio interview the week after the election he intended his speech to be a personal expression of grief. He said he had no regrets: "I didn't say anything bad at all, and I wouldn't. It's not in my heart."

Mark Penn, who conducts polls for former President Clinton (news - web sites), told Time magazine he found 49 percent of voters thought the service made them less likely to vote for a Democrat. About 67 percent of independent voters felt that way, and overall 68 percent of voters had heard about the service.

I just heard the soon to be ex-governor of Vermont and presidential hopeful Dean interviewed on John Gibson's show.

He was asked about the memorial rally, and here is his answer:

1. He wasn't there.
2. He didn't see it.
3. IT WASN'T PLANNED.

HA! Now they are back to pretending that it was a spontaneous event! Liars!

Dean also blames Republican presidents for not having balanced budgets, and says you cn prosecute a war with a blanced budget. (Unsaid...taxes as far as the eye can see.)

I will eat my rather large hat if Lautenberg serves out six years. He will until the appropriate time, and then have some health crisis. This will result in a interim selection by the Democrat Governor, Jim McGreevey, and a special election on the nearest available date. IIRC, if Lautenberg makes it to 35 days before the next November 4, the special election will be held off until the following November, 2004.

So Frank Lautenberg should be getting his bad medical news on or around October 1, 2003.

Mark my words.

"I'm sure Mondale spent the entire Election Tuesday night calling his campaign managers to tell them not to order any recount under any circumstances. In fact, he probably waited until the results from other states were in, then had several thousand of his supporters go out and vote for Coleman."

While I'm not dead certain that I'd go THAT far, I HAVE written several times in this forum the day after the election that there was doubtless no happier guy in the whole US than Fritz Mondale. He did his duty to his party and can now continue with his MUCH more lucrative gig in MN - AND go home every night and be with his family in leisurely semi-retirement. If he'd WON, his life would have been royally screwed.

And Lautenfraud is, as well, screwed. He jumped out of the woodwork straight into the MINORITY. And not just ANY minority, but one that is likely to see any number of things come to pass that he;ll be virtually powerless to stop. Plus, he'll be away from home, it'll wind up costing him money to serve, even if he does quit in 6 months, and when he DOES quit, the newby Dem senator the NJ governor appoints will be #100 on the seniority list.

Justice for the NJ Democrats is occuring with remarkable swiftness.

They couldn't call it a political rally because they had told the Republicans they had to stop campaigning while everyone mourned for Wellstone.

They couldn't have it in a Cathedral because Wellstone was Jewish.

They couldn't have it in a synagogue because (and here I am speculating) Wellstone and his family are not really religious Jews, and maybe they thought that a synagogue wouldn't give quite the right political image to TV viewers.

They needed to work the sympathy angle for all it was worth, as they did in Missouri two years ago, and they wanted to get their message out to as many people as possible. So what other choice did they have? Maybe if they had invited 15,000 somber, well-dressed Republicans to the event, it would have gone better.

"That's a good point. Somewhere on FreeRepublic there is a personal account from a Freeper who was riding on the same Amtrak train as Democratic speechwriter Bob Shrum on the day of that Wellstone rally -- and he overheard all of Shrum's cell phone conversations with McAuliffe, Harkin, etc. while Shrum was writing the speech that Harkin would deliver that night."

I remember that post! I don't remember where it is though, or even who posted it :- (

Disastrous? I don't understand that part. It was a giant party to celebrate the death of a Communist, Paul Wellstone. It freed up folks, especially, Hillary to claim ownership of ALL left wing positions without having to deal with opinions from the even further left. Hillie can now lie about being a centrist and still claim ownership of way out there.

Disastrous? No more folks that expected got blind drunk. I didn't hear about any drugs ODs, although that may just have been the local media covering. I understand the the local black hookers are pretty clean, so there probably weren't many problems with STDs. Willie almost certainly got together with his old flame, Eleanor Mondale, before the black hookers. No, it was exactly what was planned and what you'd expect from dems who thought they'd gotten rid of another Vince Foster and were sure that Mondale would win. So, they lost but 2008 is a long way off and Wellstone will still be dead. I sure hope that there will be annual anniversaries to celebrate Paul's passing!

I am sick to death of "the family" being blamed for this outrageous display of corruption run amok. And this analysis leaves out much, much more than it includes. For starters, the clintons entered, along with others, as, was it "Love Train"?, was blasting out and they were waving and being cheered? Where is THAT in this analysis?

Such shennanigans may not be necessary. Lautenfraud could step down ANYTIME and the person appointed Interim Senator would still be replaced by whomever was elected in the Special Election held during the next General election - November 2004. Unless NJ has General Elections in odd-numbered years...

The problem for McGreedy is that the person he wants to appoint to the seat is himself.

... The family members didn't tell the Clintoons and the Mondale's to behave like disgusting IDIOTS!

They didn't have to. It comes naturally to them.

You know, this 'analysis' sounds like someone examining their broken foot and saying 'Gee, if only I had painted my toenails purple. '

The toon laughing with mondale, as though it was some celebration.. The son screaming 'we will win' (you lost, a-hole).

That sums it up.

Yeah, that rant by the son was really something else.

Wellstone must have been one heck of a jockstrap to support a d!ck like that.

Thanks. Right poster, wrong thread. IIRC, it was on the live "memorial" rally thread. I didn't even know about the thread you linked to. I wish I didn't miss so much.

I hate to say this (not) but Wellstone (communist athesist that he was) would have been doing the same thing if it had been Ted Kennedy. Win at all cost is their creed.
