Vanity- Tongue piercing
Posted on 11/24/2002 5:07:38 PM PST by Trust but Verify
We have an 18 year-old daughter who wants to get her tongue pierced. We have been adamantly against any piercings for our son, and any that go beyond regular ear piercing for our daughter. We have, essentially forbidden this as well as tatooing. We feel it is a passing phase with more permanent repercussions.
Today my daughter plead her case for having it done, saying it is something she wants and can do with or without our permission now that she is 18.
She is a college freshman and is struggling with her 'identity' as such, and I think she thinks this is going to make her feel more grown-up and independent.
I'm almost to the point of telling her to do what she wants, but I know her father will have a fit and then we'll all have to live with the fall-out.
I have always sweated everything, large and small. These days, I only want to sweat the large stuff. My question is, "Is acquiescing on the tongue piercing large or small stuff?"

I think you are the miserable one. The mother herself said that the girl was miserable. Why are you dismissing that?
Perhaps this is all about getting a hole in her tongue. Based upon the mother's comments, I don't think so. Feel free to have a different opinion. That is why people post here.

If she is living on her own, and paying for her education you don't have a leg to stand on. However; if you are paying for her education OR she is living at home, and she wants to contiune the subsidy she must abide by your rules!
Once she graduates, and is living on her own; then it's totally her decision. However, I'd recommend finding articles of horror stories about infections and having her read them. There is alot of bad stuff in the mouth.
Alot depends on her course of study, but let's say she wants to become a sales exec. Her piercing would adversly affect her income potential as it would turn off potential customers. It also has the risk of turning off potential employers. If she wanted to work on a factory assembly line all her life; well then it wouldn't hurt her future. However if she aspires to a better career than that, she needs to re-think this idea. Oh, although if she's going into art or music; it might be a plus.
I don't have any problem with non-standard piercings, but they should be discrete; places where only really close friends will see them! Things like tounges, lips, noses, and eyebrows (never figured that one out!) just don't belong in the business world.
Good luck,

(Doctor Laura Mode OFF) That ususally does not work. The Dr. Laura mode is often permanent once engaged.

Personally, I think the oral sex idea is overated. Ok, maybe a woman with a pierced tounge will look like she likes to go that route; but I highly doubt it enhances the pleasure for the guy. The thought of a metal stud (no matter how lubricated) sliding along that part of my body is NOT a turn on!

You're not going to like what I'm going to say, but you've brought it up a couple of times...
It has to do with your Celtic/Irish pride thing. I'm 1/4 Irish with the other blood being English/German. I tell you, I'd trade my Irish blood for dog blood in a New York Minute.
Every last bit of culture about Ireland I've run across (especially pop culture: U2/Bono, Sinead O'Connor, yada yada) paints a people of such whiny dolts I can't believe it. If they weren't sympathizing with the Nazis during WWII, they're celibrating drunkeness. I could go on and on from being the location of John DeLorean's failed car plant to that terrorist Jerry Adams. In fact, other than John Fields (brilliant classical pianist) I can't think of a thing they've contributed to Western civilization. (Warriors from the 12th Century don't count - they never built anything like the Romans) Maybe you know lots more about the Irish than I and can point out their amazing contributions to man's progress. I'd like to hear some as I'm even tiring of the litany of depressing " 'po me - who is me troubles " I hear from and about them.
I also know enough that if I were there in person, I'd probably have to back this up with a good fight ;) But hey, we both know that!
Thanks for letting me vent on the Irish.

Don't even get me started what I think of Germans! :D

It's too late. She already defines herself by what
others think of her. She feels like she wants to look
like someone who gives good head, and she's probably
dead-set on it.

Oh yeah - to the guy with the near pierced daughter. Everybody's right. Just go to your video store and rent 3 tapes with the nastiest sounding titles. Try to keep track of the toung studs...
You have been warned.

Everybody's right. Just go to your video store and rent 3 tapes with the nastiest sounding titles. Try to keep track of the toung studs... This is pathetic. And I bet those chicks are in excellent physical shape as well.. I guess I'll have to marry a fat girl, cause all the ones who are in shape are sluts, right?

It's too late. She already defines herself by what others think of her That would be true if she was to take your advice.

It's simple. We know how to beat the hell outta people, and tell a good story about it. :)
And I think that's a damn good legacy to have.

I must've missed that part. Where did she say that? Then I shall show you...
She is very shy and doesn't date at ALL. I mean NEVER.
She doesn't hang around with anyone at school. I wish she did. All her friends are 'away' at college and she chose to stay home and commute. She has not made one friend at school yet. She goes to school, she comes straight home. She is miserable.
She is miserable because she is home going to school while all her friends are away. If she had gone away, she'd be miserable due to homesickness. She could never even make it through a whole week away at camp when she was growing up! She has not made any new friends because she is pretty introverted and has lack of self-esteem due to being overweight. Sad thing is, the more miserable she gets, the more she eats. It's a vicious cycle. This is why I think she's pressing the piercing issue. She thinks it will make her happier. Get attention, etc.
These posts are the reason for my opinion.

Take a stand against her, she will appreciate it when she gets older.

Dude, I'm not making a negative judgement here. In fact, I've always maintained that the skank-ho has been underappreciated by society at large. Just wish there were more when I was 18 - actually I had my fill :O
I'm just stating the facts as they are.
Maybe you know of a bunch of decent girls with toungs and their "man-in-the-boat" pierced, but I sure don't.

I have a mentor of sorts - an 80 year old physician with 4 kids. This subject came up at a meeting one day...another (male) physician's daughter wanted to get her tongue and eyebrow pierced. It's interesting that this girl was overweight, too. The older man had this advice.
Bribe her. She doesn't get the tongue pierced, you pay for her to go to an organized weight-loss program (or do it at home if she has a lot of will power)...then once she's lost x pounds, buy her some new clothes and a professional make-over. She'll be more confident and it will give her a goal. If she starts NOW, she'll look like a new person by Easter when her friends come home for Spring break.

Remember, 'girly', you will have to answer for your un-comely persuasions.
Apparently you neither have a daughter nor plan to have a daughter.
