New Motto For Virginia
Vanity | 11/20/2002 | BSunday

Posted on 11/20/2002 6:05:30 AM PST by BSunday

Inspired by another thread about the Massachusetts state motto, I think it is time for Virginia to dump her duplicity. We have 2 mottos ("The Old Dominion" and "Mother of Presidents") which we should whittle down to one so visiting Floridians will not be confused. So how about it ? Let's have some suggestions. Winner will be announced whenever this thread dies.

"Virginia--Go figure, we're for lovers but were named for a virgin!"

"Virginia: Capital of the Confederacy"

Virginia--Where American history began!"

"Virginia--No, Not the Land of Lincoln, rather Lee and many executed cons

Virginia's motto is Sic semper Tyrannis, meaning Thus ever unto tyrants. This is the original motto recommended for the Seal of Virginia by George Mason to the Virginia Convention in 1776. It has no literary origin of note.

I always thought it was dumb also, and I live in Virginia. I think the expression came into being during the Robb administration, which explains a lot.

How about this:

Virginia-We have guns for sale, lots of guns.

"Faster fingers finish first."

Either Bill Clinton or Pee Wee Herman said something similar.

The Springfield interchange is the most major thing about Virginia which most other people are going to notice.

Not if they visit the Shenandoah Valley.

"Virginia is for Lovers" pre-dates Robb and may go all the way back to Linwood Holton. (I said earlier they celebrated the 25th anniversary, I may have had that wrong). But I had a "Virginia is for Lovers" t-shirt as far back as 1973 when Holton was Governor and Mills Godwin was running for a second term, this time as a Republican.

Like it or not, it's been a great marketing tool for tourism in the state.

No question about that. I always make the mistake of thinking my personal views should be followed by everyone. I can't wait to become King and straighten everything out. ;-)

Me too. I saw a tee-shirt in DC that said " If Virginia is for Lovers and Maryland is for Crabs, whats DC for?". On the back of the tee-shirt: "CRACK!"

Oh, wonderful, let the state motto honor Lincoln's assassin. Lovely idea.

"Virginia...is not the Land of Lincoln but is the land of "Lee and executed cons"

Virginia: Buy one gun per month. It's THE LAW.

How the heck they expect me to keep up with that, I'll never know.
