ANOTHER F-16 CRASHES IN UTAH DESERT

Another F-16 has crashed in the Utah Test and Training Range. Just breaking now.

At least PW has troubles with turbines and you can get home. GE loses fans....not good.

Anyone know if geese or ducks or other flying FOD are active in Utah right now?

The only thing that resembles a flying duck in Utah right now are passes thrown by BYU's quarterback. I doubt he can throw it far enough to hit an F16, though.

Marie T. Huhtala U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia Marie T. Huhtala was sworn in as the American Ambassador to Malaysia on September 13, 2001, and arrived in Kuala Lumpur to take up her post on September 30.

A native of California, Ms. Huhtala joined the Foreign Service in November 1972. Her previous assignments overseas were in Paris, France (1973-75), Chiang Mai, Thailand (1976-79), Taipei, Taiwan (1984-85), Hong Kong (1985-87) and Quebec, Canada (1992-95). Just prior to her nomination as Ambassador, she served as Deputy Chief of Mission in the U.S. Embassy in Bangkok, Thailand (1998-2001).

Ms. Huhtala has also spent many years working in the State Department in Washington. Her assignments there have included stints as a staff officer in the Secretariat, as a Congressional Relations Officer, and as Chief of the Foreign Service's East Asia Assignments Division. She served as Deputy Director of the Office of Vietnam, Laos and Cambodian Affairs (1990-92) during the last stages of the Paris Peace Accords for Cambodia and the initiation of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Vietnam. Four years later she returned to that Office, which had expanded to include Thailand and Burma, as Director (1996-98), where she coordinated the U.S. response to issues ranging from the outbreak of fighting in Cambodia and the struggle for democracy in Burma to negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement with Vietnam and the economic crisis in Thailand.

Ms. Huhtala received an undergraduate degree in French (summa cum laude) from Santa Clara University and a Master's Degree in political science from Laval University. She attended the National War College at Fort McNair, graduating with the Class of 1988, and was a Member of the 38th Session of the Senior Seminar, an interagency executive development program organized by the Department of State. A career member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service, she is the recipient of the Department of State's Superior Honor Award and Meritorious Honor Award. She speaks fluent French and Thai, and has retained a little Chinese.

Marie is married to Eino A. Huhtala, Jr. The couple have two grown children, Karen R. Rulli and Lt. Jorma Huhtala, USAF.

I wonder if the rash of crashes means the military is training harder than ever for something.

You betya. LasVegas has never seen so many fighter aircraft taking off about every thirty seconds. Their red flag days are US and British only drills. ?They use to be all nato forces. Vegas is where the air force trains their counterparts to the Navy's top guns. Only the best of the best get to train there.

Several foreign nationals, including Norwegians, fly the viper at Hill. Malaysians? Very possible, but I don't recall any.

She is the U.S. Ambassador TO Malaysia. A resident of California and in the foreign service since the 70's.

I caught it after reading rather than scanning. US pilots. Several foreign nationals have died on the UTTR as well as the Nellis ranges.

Have been involved in clean up out on the range & an F-16 slamming into the ground or a mountain can leave a huge mess.

While they happen, bird strike induced crashes are rare. The ten years I spent at Nellis working on the F-15 and F-16, I saw one major birdstrike. An F-16 took a gull down the inlet, and flew home. A single bird ingestion isn't good news, but it isn't likely to bring the aircraft down. More deadly is the bird striking the canopy, especially on the F-16. Hit it in the right place, and it will induce a wave in the transparency and the wave will roll along and strike the pilot in the helmet.

Yes, bird strikes are rare. I was just wondering if geese and/or ducks were heavy in the area at this time of year.

I've seen the videos of the chicken cannon when I worked for GD. Not a happy picture. And all you can say in the flight manual is hunker down behind the HUD and slow way down or bail out.

I've said it before, God bless the men that fly and fight. They get in a machine that I didn't like to get into (sitting on the ground, engines off) to validate TOs because of the risk.

How cruel to bring up BYU's quarterback. :) Although, Matt Berry is going to be a good one. I'm waiting to see how he does in the next two games.

We used to set up and fire the gun during sea level testing at PW. The fun part was when you got to tear down for inspection. And then clean it. Smelled real nice. Not!
