I think the promissory note would be in addition to a high school handbook / code of conduct. Kind of like a reading of the Miranda rights. One is forewarned of the consequences. All players are made knowledgeable...

Is it forced upon them ? From what I can interpret, if one didn't sign this "oath" one would not play for this coach. Therefore, if one wants to play football, one must adhere to the rules, which would include signing the note.

For one thing, it would be illegal consumption, second, it would violate school policy, and third, it violated a covenant between the coach and his players.

Now about your question regarding whether all of the players would sign this oath were it merely voluntary... who knows ? It's all voluntary isn't it ? Attending school, doing homework, working out, trying out for the team, signing the oath, abstaining from drinking alcohol...

I heard from friends in MN last I was there that 'Educate Minnesota' - or whatever the 'local branch of the NEA' calls themselves - had encouraged teachers of the Red Wing school district to strike - during the school year - and because of this the football team played it's first game in the playoffs...WITHOUT THEIR COACHES - and also had to move the home playoff game to the opposition's field?! < /longestsentenceinhistory >

Hey, I am as much offended by bad grammer as anyone, but I have seen how sometimes my posts are incorrect -- usually from changing one part of a sentence then forgetting to go back and change another part (such as a verb) to agree. And lets face it -- NOBODY reads the Post Preview.

Something like that happened here in Pittsburgh. The local Catholic high school (a #1 contender) removed itself from league play because there was a really bad hazing incident and those players who did not participate did nothing to stop it. Here, the parents DID sue (what great role models THEY are!) but lost big -- but not for what I would consider the right reason. The judge said this was a separation of church and state issue, so the real issue (that playing high school football is in no way a "right" protected by any law or test of reasonableness) was side-stepped.

I was glad to see the integrity and happier to see that it is spreading. We need it badly.

This is excellent, it is a pity that Central Catholic High School students Parents here in Pittsburgh are not so adult about discipline. Kids sexually assaulted another one in a "hazing" incident, covered it up, lied to school officials and so the school pulled the entire team from the playoffs... only after internal investigations and finally turning over the police and the police charging directly the 2 students involved and the school found out other students did have knowledge and lied to the school. So the school pulls the team from the playoffs....and parents try to sue the school because their kid might miss playing in front of some scouts! Pathetic.
