Slaughter's own son was among those suspended for violating an oath they had took at the beginning of the season to abstain from alcohol consumption.

Now here we REALLY have a ROLE MODEL for(not only our youngsters),but for all of us!!!God Bless You,Coach Slaughter!!!!!!!!!!

This team was ranked number one in their high school football division ( AAA ), and the benching of all of the first string (starters) came during a post season playoff game.
I tip my hat to this coach.

Equally wonderful is the reaction of the parents. Hats off to them.

Good for coach Slaughter.
My only question would be if this was a prerequisite for playing on the team?
Did all the players voluntarily sign the promissary note or was it forced upon them just to be able to play? Would all of them have signed it if they could play without signing it?

Reminds me of a story I read about a couple of young hockey players at a boarding school in rural Saskatchewan who later went on to play in the NHL.
They were part of a group of players that had been caught with alcohol in their dorm rooms. The next game on the schedule was the school's annual "Homecoming Game" -- traditionally this game was scheduled on a weekend, and all the players' families traveled from all over Canada to see their kids play.
Nothing unusual happened in the days leading up to the game, but after the team had gotten dressed before game the coach singled out the players who had been caught with the alcohol in their rooms. Not only were they kept out of the game, but they were ordered to sit in the stands with their families with all of their hockey equipment on. The guy who told the story described it as the most embarrassing thing he ever went through, since the players obviously had to explain to their families what the hell they were doing in the stands like that while the biggest game of the year was being played on the ice.
But the players on the ice had it even worse because they played with a very small roster that game. The team played the entire game with only two defensemen -- and any hockey fans out there will know how exhausting that must have been for those poor guys!

I know... I'm almost overwhelmed by this demonstration of CHARACTER. Probably, in a bygone era folks wouldn't find this to be extraordinary.
Here in my town, I can recall several letters to the editor from parents whining about their children and how the school was so unfair to them because of repercussions to their childrens' (teenagers) unacceptable behavior in school.

they had taken ?

If this had happened in Georgia, the coach would have been LYNCHED.

Amen ! Lesson learned. Chalk one up for the coach.
To: freepersup
Knowing what things are like in today's society, I was expecting lawsuits or physical violence against the coach.

Equally wonderful is the reaction of the parents. Hats off to them. You're right. I'm seriously surprised someone hasn't filed a lawsuit.

That was my first thought too. Kudos to the parents for backing up the coach.
Great story.
