There was an even more stunning end to a CFL game last year between Calgary and Edmonton.

Edmonton scored a touchdown to go up by one point with about 30 seconds left in the game. Because it would have been pointless to kick the extra point to go up by two, Edmonton decided to try for a 2-point conversion that would put them up by three points (so a last-second field goal by Calgary would only tie the game).

The Edmonton quarterback threw a pass toward one side of the end zone, and a Calgary defensive back intercepted it and ran it all the way back for a "touchdown." According to CFL rules (and NFL rules too, I think), any pass (or blocked kick that is recovered before it touches the ground) that is returned the length of the field like this counts for the number of points that would have been scored if the offensive team had converted successfully (two points in this case). Calgary won the game by a single point.

Hilarious. Look at the faces of the guys in the foreground who realized what had happened.

This is like "Dewey Defeats Truman." It's one of the funniest sports pics ever, reminiscent of the shot of the no-hitter Andy Hawkins of the Yankees threw against the White Sox in 1990. The Yankees lost the game 4-0 when the Chisox scored four runs on three errors and two walks with two out in the bottom of the eighth.

When a pitcher throws a no-hitter, it is incumbent upon photographers to have a shot of the hurler on the mound with the scoreboard in the background as he is throwing the final pitch of the game. For example, the above photo, of Don Larsen's last pitch in the 1956 World Series, with the scoreboard in the background full of the losing team's goose eggs (in this case, the Brooklyn Dodgers). Here's what the scoreboard behind Hawkins looked like as he threw his final pitch of the game:

NEW YORK 000 000 000 043
WHITE SOX 000 000 04x 402

If you have the Real Player, you can listen to the game-losing error here.

This shot makes me thankful. One of the advantages of being in a community college is that there is no chance our student body will have to live down something like this.
