Two years after the strangest presidential race in history, California was providing the nation with a tantalizing finish to its gubernatorial contest.

Despite leading handily in all the public polls, Gov. Gray Davis clung to a narrow lead over Republican Bill Simon as votes were counted into the night Tuesday.

Today is the day when "Gay" Davis will start running for President and no doubt the dirty money will flow in. However, don't let them ever forget that Bill Simon won last night in 40 of the 58 counties. So there. For victory & freedom!!!

With all the discussions we have had about Davis in the past year or two, it is inconceivable to me how he could have been re-elected.

As much as I wanted Simon to win, "The Duffus" gets the honor of cleaning up his own mess.

Early odds on California going the route of NY in 1976 (i.e. bankruptcy)? I'd say at least 3 out of 5.

Look at the returns for Los Angeles and San Francisco counties. Looks like a lot of 'irregularities' to me....

That's how Davis 'won'.

Your odds are not out of line.. A lot depends if the Rats push for tax cuts and cut the size of govt and get rid of the multiple layers of bureacracies and legislation that strangle this state's economic and business climates. HHHAAAA!!

Hell, Gephardt "was for tax cuts" at the end of the election. The Rats could learn a lot from such "inspired leadership" here in california.

Instead, they will strangle the Golden Goose and blame it on the republicans.

We need lower taxes, less govt, less burdensome regulation on businesses.. not more taxes and more spending.

What part of that is it all those voters who are registered BUT didn't vote just do not understand :-?

The "messy budgit problems" were caused by Davis and his coharts in the legislature. He will use massive tax hikes to try and balance the budgit. However will they in the meantime curb spending. I doubt it. Also the voters voted in Billions$$$$$ of bond issues that will have to be paid off. This state is in a mess and getting worse. Parley

You don't really think it will get cleaned up, do you? Four more years of Davis and California will probably in even deeper.

What Republicans have to learn is what Bush taught us in this election. Bush and Rowe really hand picked candidates that could win in democratic states. In liberal states Bush and Rowe selected RINO canddiates. Becuase they like Rinos? No. They wanted control of the Senate and that was the only way to get it.

Coleman is a former Democrat and very very RINO. Talent is RINO with a capital R. What bush did is what it takes to win. In conservative states we ran conservative candidates. In liberal states we ran RINOs. Those RINOs will give Bush control of the Senate. And guess who they owe their victory to? They owe it to the bush coat tails. And they will vote with Dubya on the important issues.

This nation is still evenly divided. There is no way we can win a majority with right wing candidates in all states. Bush is doing what has to be done. He will use RINOs to get control and then his conservatives can move his agenda. His victory will force some DINO's to vote with Bush. If they don't he will sick a RINO on them in 2000 and Zap they are gone. This victory will make it impossible for Daschle and Company to hold the DINOs when bush wants their votes.

THIS IS THE WAY NATIONS ARE CHANGED AND MOVED.

The RINOS elected last night will confirm conservative judges who will shape the judicary for a generation. The RINO's elected last night will make tax cuts permanent. The RINOs elected last night will help move this nation just a bit to the right. We will use Rino's and Dinos to implement a conservative agenda. It that agenda works it will move the nation even more to the RIGHT. That is how it is done.

And if we are smart enough to keep it up in time what we call a RINO's today will left wing nuts tomorrow. We can move the center so what used to be right becomes a new center.

In California republicans did exactly what I predicted they would do. They conducted a campaign where the vote totals in the governers race were so low that they consisted of only the two party bases. There was no way that a Republicn in a Democrat state can win when all he does is try tp make his base happy by attacking the Democrat. Davis reduced Simon to just the right core. Davis was already at the left core. DAvis had to have an opponent who would not give the RINOS and DINOS reasons to vote for him. He was very successful. Simon was clueless.

I know that tomorrow at the latest Bush and Rowe will be meeting to figure out how to turn California around. That will mean more RINO's. It will mean trying to move the state just a tiny bit less left that it is now. It means working for people with whom we disagree on many issuses. It means not allowing Democrats to use negative ads to drive us away from a RINO that can win.

Because as we saw last night, we did indeed get some new RINOs. In some of those states because of the RINO victory we got enough to get a couple of real conservatives elected to state offices and house seats. They are just one more tiny move to the right.

If we can learn that politics is the art of the possible. And that defeat is indeed defeat. If we can learn that nothing is changed in total defeat. If we can lean that even tiny victories such as replacing a liberal with a RINO are what it takes to change America, we will be on our way to change America.

I have said it before. It bears repeating.

For a Repubican to win in a Democratic state, he has to say things that will convice Democrats to vote for him.

Anything else results in a Democrat win.

Maybe it is better that the Goober was re-elected, If Simon had won he would have taken the heat for the State mess, people would say "You are Governor, it's your fault" let Davis squirm.......

This state is in a mess and getting worse.

God, I guess. We are in deep doo doo with the reelection of Davis. All our major problems are only going to get worse. Let Davis and his cohorts dig themselves out of this mess. I will watch them twist in the wind over the next four years.

Yep, Davis had a hard time winning against a guy who ran the single worst political campaign I can recall. And now, he has to deal with all the billions of dollars of debt he piled onto the people of California. The taxpayers are not going to have any extended love-fest with old Gray Davis, not when the bills for his mismanagement come due. (And he can't blame ENRON forever...)

Also, he cannot expect much help from a Republican-controlled Washington. If I were in business in California, I would be looking to get the hell out.

What part of that is it all those voters who are registered BUT didn't vote just do not understand :-?

They are same vermin who just voted to retain the Massachusett's income tax. Morons and fools, maybe, but it just shows you how many people are "on the take" vs. how many people actually pay taxes.

This article is a waste of words. Davis is an economic illiterate. His solution? - Raise taxes.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
Don't laugh... after he is "done" dealing with his own mess, impeachment is not out of the question.

Wait until those rocks-for-brains voters find out that the necessary rise in taxes will impact eveybody not just the class-warfare "idle rich", or those exploiting corporations...

I usually don't flame spelling or grammar, but here I'm going to have to make an exception. "RINOS," "RINO's," "RINOs," "Rino's." In one frigging paragraph! Please MAKE UP YOUR MIND!

(The correct use of an acronym in this manner is "RINOs." The acronym is in capitals, the plural suffix is NOT in capitals, and since it's not a contraction, NO apostrophe.)
