Lott Sees Window of Opportunity To Get Things Done

It turned out to be a great night, Senate Minority Leader Trent Lott said Wednesday morning, as he pronounced the midterm election a referendum on President Bush's leadership. "I think the fact that everywhere he went - he didn't talk about the Democrat opponent, call them names or be negative -- he talked about what we need to do for the country, what we need to do to work together." Lott, who was with Bush as the election returns came in, said the president was very excited and "fired up." "It was fun to watch him, actually. He was making phone calls...as soon as there was some indication or projections that they [Republicans] would win."

Lott said he sees the Senate shift as a window of opportunity. "I think we will be expected to produce results, and I think that's fair enough," he said. He mentioned the economy, retirement security, prescription drugs, and homeland security. "It won't be easy," Lott admitted. "The Senate moves very slowly, and quite often you need 60 votes to make anything happen. But I accept the challenge. We can be on offense...Hopefully we can work with the Democrats - I'll certainly be talking to Tom Daschle today to see what we can do." Said Lott, "Surely we've got a window here of a year where we can produce what the country needs.""

Lott is the biggest obstacle to enacting the Republican agenda.

Maybe with this majority we should try a new leader with at least one ball.

I hope Lott knows what to do with victory, but I think he can be counted on to give back to the Dems willingly what was won at the polls.

Can't the GOP see that Lott is exactly the wrong guy right now? He has the look and delivery of some protestant preacher from the fifties, and he's famous only for rolling over and equivocation.

RNC, do NOT blow this one.

Why didn't Sen. Lett (as in what will the Dems lett me do?) use the word, "mandate?" After the last two years of being dumped on by Dashole, is he still going to try to be bi-partisan?

Agreed! Lott needs to go. We need a firebrand in the Senate. Republicans have to dust off (or find) their hard balls. It is time to stop playing tiddly winks with our country!

The Democrats have pulled the center way off into left field. It is time to realign the political landscape.

Perhaps, we need to begin a campaign of our own to RNC Chairman Racicot? After this big win, Republicans will reap big donations. Perhaps, we need to tell Racicot that we will donate once we see the leadership start using the word, "mandate."

I knew it! Lott has got to go. Everyone else is savoring the victory and he is already talking about working with the Democrats.

Hello, Trent, we WON. I'm calling his office now!

For all the years I have been on this forum, all I have heard is excuses about why Republicans can't deliver. They need total control it was said.

Now they have it, the Presidency, the House, the Senate, arguably the Supreme court.

Does this mean we will have NO NEW ENTITLEMENTS? NO EXPANSION OF GOVERNMENT? THE REPEAL OF THE CAMPAIGN FINANCE LAWS?

I think not.

Will Republican voters hold their feet to the fire? Will they throw them out if they don't deliver smaller government and restore lost rights?

In a word, no.

Lott is the wrong person for Senate majority leader. We need a strong leader, like __________ (put a name here).
