Brian Williams just stated that the question is not whether the GOP will control the Senate, but what the margin of their control will be which he said will likely be the focus for most of the rest of the night's news reporting!

As for your question, the answer is that the GOP will change over to GOP control (50-49-1) as soon as the Democrat Governor allows Senator Elect Talent to be sworn in to office. He could delay it but would be under pressure to do it within a week or two.

What is the current make up of the Seante? Didn't Welstone's Dem seat get changed to Independent due to Ventura naming a replacement?

Current Senate makeup is 49-49-2. Will shift to 50-48-2 when Talent is sworn into office later this month. I predict independent will opt to caucus with the RATS forcing Cheney to break the tie. So Trent Lott becomes Majority Leader this month, but Daschle said he wouldn't allow a reorganizing resolution before January which means that RAT Committee Chairman will likely continue until January 4 when all the Committee Chairman will switch to GOP!
