Study: American Youth More Conservative, Less Moral
Maranath Christian Journal ^ | 10/30/02 | Josephson Institute of Ethics

Posted on 11/02/2002 5:40:06 PM PST by T Ruth

[A] recent report by the Josephson Institute of Ethics reports that students admitting they cheated on an exam at least once in the previous year jumped from 61 percent in 1992 to 74 percent in 2002; the number who stole something from a store within the year rose from 31 percent to 38 percent; and the percentage who admit they lied to their teachers and parents also increased significantly.

The Josephson study, released as part of the Oct. 20-26 National Character Counts Week, also indicates alarming deterioration over the past two years. Cheating rose from 71 percent in 2000 to 74 percent in 2002; theft increased from 35 percent to 38 percent; and those who said they would be willing to lie to get a good job jumped from 28 percent to 39 percent.

The survey also found that students who attend private religious schools were less likely to shoplift but more likely to cheat on exams and lie to teachers. Also, students who participate in varsity sports cheated on exams at a higher rate than students who did not play sports.

"The evidence is that a willingness to cheat has become the norm and that parents, teachers, coaches and even religious educators have not been able to stem the tide," said Michael Josephson, president of the Josephson Institute of Ethics, based in Marina del Rey, Calif. "The scary thing is that so many kids are entering the workforce to become corporate executives, politicians, airplane mechanics and nuclear inspectors with the dispositions and skills of cheaters and thieves."

Gender is the most significant differentiating factor among high school students, the Josephson report said. While girls cheat and lie as much as boys in general, they are substantially less likely to steal or engage in other dishonest practices and they have more positive attitudes toward ethics.

Participation in varsity sports did not make a difference in behavior except for the likelihood of cheating on exams. The study also found that students who attend private religious schools do not act much better than those who attend public schools. Generally, students who claimed their religion is essential or very important to them also performed on the national average.

The Josephson report is based on a survey of 12,000 high school students administered by schools throughout the nation. The Josephson Institute of Ethics is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that conducts a national survey of the ethics of American youth every two years.

The legacy of not only Klinton, but of the NEA and the ACLU, aided and abetted by the DemoRATS.

One man alone could not have done all that damage. This has been a long time in the making.

The end result of a nation of tyranical bureaucracies, full of hypocracy and corruption. The rampant socialism in America has created liars and cheaters because they have learned the "system" is corrupt and unjust. These young people are not buying into the diversity/perversity, eco-socialism, "zero tolerance", no smoking, ban this, ban that, "just say no" to drugs crap. They can see right through all the hypocracy.

We have an opportunity to teach them our true Constitutional form of government, make them believers of individual liberty and our "inalienable rights", and they will make fine patriots in dismantling and replacing this monstrosity of a government.

Yeah, Clintoon was probably more of a product of his times, unfortunately. Really in earlier times we wouldn't have knowingly entrusted the office to someone incapable of honoring his own marriage vows, or someone who hadn't served in the military during wartime.

ALL the above have lied to the American public at one time or another. Just who are they youth of today susposed to lookup to as role models?

You are right. However, Bill Clinton was a great role model for immoral behavior, and the results of the study are properly part of his legacy.

How about their very own parents? That's their first and foremost responsibility.

No mercy.

"How about their very own parents? That's their first and foremost responsibility."

The State has been taking responsiblity away from parents via government run public schools for quite some time now. Government run public schools have strayed away from basic academics and moved into all sorts of misguided social engineering all under the pretense of "raising children". Fortunately, some parents are starting to see the mistake in letting the government "raise" their kids, hence the growth in private, religious, and home schools.

"Clinton's legacy."

That may be. It goes way beyond students. This is the way the whole system operates now. Nothing is concrete. If you are a powerful person you can get away with murder. Our voting system is hampered with massive fraud. Everything is a total mess and the father you down this dark road then the lesser the chances of ever turning back. At least not without hard times and divine intervention.

Study: American Youth More Conservative, Less Moral

We're more cynical both of those things follow from that.

In my opinion, I'd blame government for most of this. Our government has embraced rampant socialism, which has fostered all this corruption. They've even rigged politics so that the true right wing, conservatives, constitutionalists, libertarians, will never reach the American sheeple. Clinton, Newt, HGCI, etc are just pigs at the socialist trough.

Where in this article is there anything that resembles conservative behavior? The title of this article is very misleading, at least as far as the "conservative" part goes.
