The following article is from last Thursday. However, it was confirmed yesterday that President Bush WILL DEFINITELY be here. I'll post the Martinsburg Journal article stating so tomorrow when it goes online.
Word of a possible visit by President Bush to Charleston next week has supporters of Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito and other Republican candidates hoping for a pre-election boost from their commander-in-chief.
State Republicans said today that while there wouldn't be official word from the White House until the middle of next week, a visit from Bush would be a "tremendous lift" to the Capito campaign.
Gary Abernathy, executive director of the state GOP, said he would remain silent on the possibility of a Bush visit, at least for now. "I'd hate to kill the trip by commenting on it," he said.
Local Republicans are on alert for a possible Nov. 1 visit. The visit would mark Bush's seventh trip to the Mountain State since 2000.
Capito has asked Bush to make another visit to West Virginia before the Nov. 5 election, though the White House declined to comment on any potential additions to the president's travel schedule.
Local Republicans say the White House doesn't like to detail the president's schedule until a couple of days before an event.
Martin Baker, Capito's campaign manager, said he hasn't heard anything definite about a Bush visit.
"I have not heard anything from the White House," he said. "There's an open invitation to the president of the United States. Shelley Moore Capito is more than happy to be his host."
Many say that Bush's three visits to West Virginia as a candidate in 2000 and outspoken support of the Republican congressional hopeful helped put Capito over the top in her first bout with Democratic challenger Jim Humphreys.
Senate Minority Leader Vic Sprouse, R-Kanawha, said today he has "heard the rumblings" about a possible visit by Bush but hadn't received any confirmation from anyone.
"If that's the case they probably won't definitely confirm it until Tuesday or Wednesday," he said, because the White House usually doesn't release the president's schedule any further in advance.
"If he would come, what a wonderful thing it would be not only for Shelley but for all of our local candidates," Sprouse said. "That truly would be a huge, huge boost going into the last days of the campaign."
State Republican Chairman Kris Warner said he couldn't "confirm or deny" a Bush appearance before the election. But he said the state Republicans have extended an open invitation to the President.
He said a presidential appearance in the days before the election could be a great help to Capito in her hotly contested race with Humphries. "It would definitely be helpful and we always welcome the president," Warner said. "If he came before Nov. 5, it would be greatly appreciated."
The president's itinerary in the last weeks before the campaign is slated to focus on states with the most competitive House, Senate and gubernatorial races.
Voters will choose governors in 36 states in November and the election will decide control of the closely divided Congress.
West Virginia did not appear on the list for last minute visits, but White House officials always have said the itinerary was fluid, designed to focus on the most at-risk candidates and in the races where the president could make the most difference. A preliminary schedule included stops in Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin.
Bush today visits North Carolina, South Carolina and Alabama, where Republicans hope to make gains next month. This week he already has visited Maine and Pennsylvania.
In 2000, Bush visited Charleston, Huntington and Morgantown. In 2001, he came to Charleston to highlight his plans for the military. Earlier this year he toured Belle and stopped at Ripley's Fourth of July celebration.
If he comes, it would be fun for me if you could get one of the "I stand with President George W. Bush" bumperstickers in a photo.
Cheers!
Rockefeller opposes mining and drilling, such as in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), I suspect, so the contrast might prove newsworthy...

Bill
Couldn't agree with anything more. The number of Democrats in WV that have told me they are voting for Jay Wolfe is astounding.
The media, thankfully, is ignoring the fact that the President is coming in in support of Capito, yes---but he is also here to give a final push to help FReeper Jay Wolfe in his bid to upset leftist Senator Jay Rockefeller.
The time for the event is now set for 6:00 pm...if someone needs more info, feel free to FReepmail me.
