USO Canteen FReeper Style Liberty R&R to Arkansas .... October 26,2002

The USO Canteen FReeper Style
Delivering a Touch of Home

.

.

A Touch of Home

.

This is how I think of the USO Canteen
Freeper Style. It is like a cottage down a road,
a place where a weary veteran can spend the night.

Since it opened, it is magical how so many
Freepers who post here, feel it too.
It has been so dear how the Freepers
kept making it a cottage - a home-type of
place that had a huge living room
for them to visit in and a dance floor,
a library, etc.

Many Veterans have written to me,
saying that the Canteen is like home
to them for the first time since they
served.

This is your Canteen -
a respite from our busy
and sometimes troubling world.
Make yourself at home.

Snow Bunny

.

.

.

If you know a Veteran, someone in your family,
friend of the family, neighbor, who served their
country, take a brief moment of your day to thank
them.

Thank them for the sacrifice they made
for the better good of their country.

We at Free Republic, and the USO Canteen FReeper
Style, are thankful for every service member
in our military, who has served our great nation.

So, to the men and women who answered the call,
In both times of war and peace, thank you.

.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae

Toad Suck Daze

Long ago, steamboats traveled the
Arkansas River when the water was
at the right depth. When it wasn't, the
captains and their crew tied up to wait
where the Toad Suck Lock and Dam now
spans the river.

While they waited, they refreshed themselves
at the local tavern there, to the dismay of the
folks living nearby, who said: "They suck on
the bottle 'til they swell up like toads." Hence,
the name Toad Suck. The tavern is long gone,
but the legend and fun live on at Toad Suck Daze.

Today's FEEBLE attempt at humor:

Father: Why don't you get yourself a job?

Son: Why?

Father: So you could earn some money.

Son: Why?

Father: So you could put some money in a bank and earn
interest.

Son: Why?

Father: So that when you're old you can use the money in
your account...and you would never have to work again.

Son: I'm not working now.

Catalina Bump

"Cats Have Claws"

The Consolidated PBY Catalina was considered obsolete by the U.S. Navy in 1939. However, the "Cat" turned out to be the best anti-sub aircraft available at the start of the Battle of the Atlantic because of it's range, capacity, and durability and was employed by many countries for ASW. This print features a U.S. Navy PBY-5A Catalina in early W.W.II markings engaged in a running battle with the scourge of the North Atlantic - a German type VII U-Boat.

The PBY Catalina which first flew in 1935 was ordered by the United States Navy as a naval patrol seaplane, capable of a 3000 mile range at 100 miles per hour. The Royal Air Force also used Catalinas as well as the Canadian, Australian, and New Zealand Air Forces. Post-war they were provided to many countries including France, Norway, Sweden & Denmark to rebuild their depleted air forces. There are still numerous aircraft in service around the world, although its peacetime role as a fire fighter is a far cry from its original designed role.

"Black Cat" PBY Catalina stalks enemy shipping as night falls in the far reaches of the Pacific.

Flight Out of Hell" by Nicholas Trudgian. Lt. Nate Gordon's Black Cat takes off after having rescued the downed crew of a B-25 bomber. The PBY is under fire from Japanese ground units on the nearby island. Gordon received the Medal of Honor for his rescues that day.

World War II 1941-1945
Medal of Honor Recipient

PRIVATE
WILSON D. WATSON, USMCR
(DECEASED)

Private Wilson D. Watson, who received the Medal of Honor for heroism on Iwo Jima in World War II, was born on February 16, 1921 at Earle, Arkansas, the son of Mrs. Ada Watson. He died on December 19, 1994 in Russellville, Arkansas.

Before his enlistment at Little Rock, Arkansas, on August 6, 1942, he worked on his father's farm and completed seven years of grade school. Private Watson received his basic training at the Recruit Depot, San Diego, California, and went overseas January 24, 1943.

Serving as an automatic rifleman with the 2d Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d Marine Division during the bitter fighting on Iwo Jima, Private Watson earned the Medal of Honor for heroism during February 26 and 27, 1945, when he single-handedly killed more than 60 Japanese and enabled his pinned-down platoon to continue the advance. He was evacuated from Iwo Jima after suffering a gun shot wound in the neck on March 2, 1945. He previously saw action at Bougainville and Guam.

Private Watson was presented the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman on October 5, 1945 at the White House. Following his discharge from the Marine Corps, Watson enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private on September 1946.

"Noble Band of Brothers - Valiant Sons of Arkansas"
by Rick Reeves

Soldiers of the combined 1st and 15th Regiment Arkansas Volunteer Infantry enjoy a brief respite during the brutally fought Atlanta Campaign.

The Bayonet or Retreat
The battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas.

Maj. Gen. Thomas C. Hindman sought to destroy Brig. Gen. Francis Herron’s and Brig. Gen. James Blunt’s divisions before they joined forces. Hindman placed his large force between the two Union divisions, turning on Herron first and routing his cavalry. As Hindman pursued the cavalry, he met Herron’s infantry which pushed him back. The Rebels then established their line of battle on a wooded high ridge northeast of Prairie Grove Church. Herron brought his artillery across the Illinois River and initiated an artillery duel. The Union troops assaulted twice and were repulsed. The Confederates counterattacked, were halted by Union canister, and then moved forward again. Just when it looked as if the Rebel attack would roll up Herron’s troops, Blunt’s men assailed the Confederate left flank. As night came, neither side had won, but Hindman retreated to Van Buren. Hindman’s retreat established Federal control of northwest Arkansas.

Bless This House sung along with this morning, twice because I love this song for our USO Canteen, and Prayer of Protection said for all who enter the USO Canteen Freeper Style, including our troops, our veterans, their families and our allies. Welcome to all who come to honor our troops, for whom this USO Canteen was created.

A PRAYER OF PROTECTION

The light of God surround you

The love of God enfold you

The power of God protect you

The presence of God watch over you

Wherever you are, God is,

And all is well.

Amen.

Wherever you are, God is, and all is well!

And here's hoping FR will stay up all day today.
