President Bush and First Lady Laura greeted Chinese President Jiang Zemin and his wife, Wang Yeping in Crawford, Texas today. Bush and Zemin will be discussing the situation in North Korea as well as the war on terror. The President also issued a statement regarding the untimely death of Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone. The flag over the White House was lowered to half-staff in honor of Wellstone. Enjoy your daily dose of Dubya!

"Jiang is a dictator responsible for crimes against the people of China," he said. "His hands are filled with blood, and (Bush) should not get bloody by shaking them."

I couldn't say it better myself. Jiang Zemin is a disgusting pig of man. Or maybe just a disgusting pig. The crimes perpetrated by the Islamists who the Chinese are supposedly helping us combat do not approach the number of Asians murdered, innocents imprisoned, and American POWs abused by those thugs in the Chinese Communist Party.

It digusts me to see our President so comfortable around such a man. It's just like when Truman completely misread Stalin, despite the massive amounts of information available to him about the tyrant. What a sad day for America and China.

I seriously doubt the President is comfortable with Jiang and his policies.

Sssshhh! It's the GOP plan to confuse the Chicoms with uniforms. And it's already working. Note how ol' Jiang showed up in his nearly-Texas gear, to his consternation, no doubt? hehe

Our President is one INCREDIBLY handsome man!! I just love his casual West Texas look -- open collar, big belt buckle, cowboy boots (SIGH!)!!

On a more serious note, I certainly plan to say a few extra prayers for Paul Wellstone and his family (particularly his surviving sons). However, I am already nauseated by the liberal media's use of this tragedy to advance the political agenda/election hopes of the Democrats!

Seven: Keep us posted on the continuing drama in Russia!

Rintense: Thanks so much for your persistence!!

All: The most recent poll in Florida indicates that Jeb has widened his lead to 7 points, surpassing the magical 50% mark!! I think Mom Bush and Big Brother Bush need to provide a final get-out-the-vote push next weekend!!

Bush never misread Zemin.

Remember the spy plane incident shortly after Bush was sworn in? Nothing's changed. It's just that W knows how to be a true statesman, which is in short supply these days, and which often requires holding one's nose while shaking hands, and never yielding on the big points of principle.

Excellent points, GretchenEE. It's not as if Bush hasn't shaken the man's hand before. Bush traveled to China last year.

President Bush is engaging a member of the Security Council (Permanent 5). I prefer to take a wait and see attitude. Alliance ? nah Coalition ? nah Persuasion maybe ?

Well put, Gretchen. While we abhor Jiang's policies, we can only influence change through dialogue. A few weeks ago I spoke with a Falun Gong member on the Baylor campus who was with a larger group handing out literature. They are praying W can help. A large group of FG has been in our area since the Economic Summit and they are very peaceful, gentle, well spoken people who deserve to be heard.

11 days and counting...except we will have to wait until January to reap the fruits if the Dems are turned out in the election

Apparently not, if Jim Talent wins in MO. Technically, since the widder Carnahan was just an appointee, if Talent wins, he can be seated in the Senate IMMEDIATELY! That means if everything else stays the same, except for a Talent win, We'd STILL have one more Repub than Dems on Nov. 6th and could take back control of the Senate without having to wait until January!

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I thought I read this on another FR thread the other day.

Good job, rintense! I have been frustrated all day not being able to get into FR. I was able to get to the login page, then the "My Comments" page, but after that I kept getting 'page not available'. I think it was taking so long that my computer just timed it out! But it is great to have it back!

You are correct, I overlooked this important detail. What are the provisions in election statutes when a Senator is seated due to a death ? Two years in office as an appointee and then an election ? Isn't that the case here ?
