President Bush signed a $355 billion military spending bill in the White House Rose Garden this morning, which gives the Pentagon a nearly $40 billion boost as it prepares for possible war with Iraq. Bush also hosted a private forum on the sexual solicitation and exploitation of children over the Internet and urged the Senate to approve a bill banning computer simulations of child pornography. The President also used the forum as an opportunity to express his concern over the Beltway Sniper killings. The President also spoke with the President of Turkey today. Enjoy your daily dose of Dubya!
QUOTE OF THE DAY: Because children are so vulnerable, they're often the targets of cruel and ruthless criminals. I'm deeply saddened by the recent tragedy that we've seen here in Washington. There is a ruthless person on the loose.

Good Evening!
Southern Media and Opinion Research Poll
Landrieu 45.1%
Elections Commissioner Suzanne Haik Terrell 15.5%
Congressman John Cooksey has 9.1%
State Representative Tony Perkins 4.2%
Five other candidates share just over 1%.
Undecided 24.6%
Margin of error 4%
Mary Landrieu is on the verge of winning in the November primary if she can hold on to her white vote in the final two weeks and get a large turnout of blacks. Landrieu needs 5% of the undecided segment, which includes a large number of black women.
The polling company interviewed 600 registered voters from October 11 - 16. All were asked who they would vote for if the election were held that day.
Mason Dixon Poll
Landrieu 44%
Haik-Terrell 20%
Cooksey 15%
Perkins 5%
Undecided 12%
Margin of error 5%
400 likely voters statewide were polled between Oct 17 - 19
Turnout is the key, especially among black voters.
The poll showed 77% of black voters siding with Landrieu, who got more than 99% of the same vote in the highly controversal 1996 Senate race.
In this poll Landrieu got 31% of the white vote, "a level usually adequate for a Democrat to win, considering she gets the typical nine out of 10 black votes."
This poll seems to feel if Iraq stays in the forefront that Landrieu will likely be forced into a run-off on Dec 7th. If concerns about Iraq fade and the economy or domestic issues rise then Landrieu may win outright. Anytime an incumbant is faced with the possibility of a run-off they aren't necessarily a shoo in. Landrieu needs 50% + 1 vote to avoid a run-off. She is from New Orleans and held an elected state office before narrowly winning by a 5,000 vote margin in 1998. If anyone has a chance of beating her it will be Suzanne Haik-Terrell. Terrell is also from New Orleans and holds an elected state office. Terrell has received the endorsement of the RNC Senatorial Committee. She is smart, well informed and conservative. I believe Terrell can beat Landrieu in a two person race.
