The term "critical ads" caught my eye, so I consulted my "Major Media Style Book." In the "Today's Party Line" section, I found an explaination. It would appear that what we would call "negative ads" or "negative campaigning" if we were talking about Republicans, we should refer to as "critical ads" when talking about Democrats. Mystery solved.
Alternative suggestions were "hard-hitting ads" and "feisty campaign tools." The MMSB went on to explain that, while the voting public is put off by "negative ads," this is not true of "critical ads" etc. This is because "critical ads" are necessary in protecting and nurturing "the public's right to know."
