Liberal Group's Ad Targets 'Right Wing' Senate Candidates

A liberal advocacy group that has gained prominence for its work to block President Bush's more conservative judicial nominees is now trying to discourage voters from returning control of the Senate to Republicans.

People for the American Way (PFAW) has launched a television ad campaign entitled "One Vote Away." The commercial "warns of the devastating consequences if right wing Republicans control all three branches of government," according to the PFAW website.

"Today the White House and the House of Representatives are controlled by the right wing of the Republican Party. And with just one more vote they'll control the U.S. Senate," the ad states.

"Their unchecked political power would be devastating for a woman's right to choose, our environment, social security, and corporate accountability. And could guarantee a Supreme Court controlled by the far right for decades.

"With your family's future at stake, should one political party have this much power?," the commercial continues. "Your vote for senator counts on November 5th."

PFAW claims, in its online commentary about the ad, that the so-called "right wing" of the Republican Party has been thwarted by "moderate" Democrats for the past nine years.

"From 1994 through 2000, President Clinton's veto proved an effective check on the right-wing leaders' power. In 2001 and 2002, Democratic control of the Senate has provided a crucial check," the website says.

"But if Republicans take the Senate in November, that last check in our federal system will be gone. The far right is just one vote away from replacing Tom Daschle with Trent Lott, Patrick Leahy with Orrin Hatch, and making similarly disturbing leadership changes across the board."

Conservative observers call the ad a sensational attempt to scare voters, and say it is not surprising.

"This is just the sort of thing one would expect from People for the American Way, which is little more than an auxiliary arm of the left fringe of the Democrat party," said David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union (ACU). "Fortunately, the average voter is a good bit more level-headed than Norman Lear and Ralph Neas."

Lear founded PFAW in response to criticism of the controversial content of many of the situation comedies he wrote, produced and directed, according to film critic Hal Erickson of All Movie Guide. Neas, a former congressional staff member and failed Democratic Senate candidate from Maryland, has been recognized by liberal groups such as Common Cause and Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.

Keene noted that Lear and Neas are representative of PFAW's small, ultra-liberal membership.

"[This group] is funded by just the sort of elitists who, while they don't understand the people of this country, do know how to manipulate and profit from just the sort of corporate irresponsibility they so cavalierly condemn," Keene charged.

PFAW did not specify where it will run the ad, noting only that, "We are planning to run the ads in a number of states where the Senate races are toss-ups."

A political consultant, who spoke with CNSNews.com on condition of anonymity, predicted the commercial will have little impact on voters. Most conservative and moderate voters recognize that liberal groups such as PFAW have capitalized on Democrat's control of the Senate to block well-qualified judicial nominees, he said, and to derail numerous legislative proposals that most Americans support.

People For The American Way is a despicable hate organization. (See How To Recognize The Bigot In The Argument.)

I do not believe that they have ever--ever--endorsed the traditional "American way" of doing anything.

Hmmm. So did People For The Commie Way ever run ads against the Rats when they held both the House and the Senate during a Presidential election year?

Does their tax status permit them to campaign against candidates? They may be able to raise issues but it sounds like these ads say "Vote against the Republican candidates".

You know, this ad is very risky. It could actually turn out to backfire against them.

If (admittedly an unknowable till Election Day) but IF the American people react strongly to the news out of North Korea, they may just say to themselves "I trust President Bush more than anyone else on terrorism. Why would we want divided government NOW, in a major crisis? This is WW3. We need smooth harmony in govt now, not endless debates and dissent."

IMHO, that's why this ad is a double edged sword. I have a weird feeling that this N Korea thing may be the final straw with the voters. No matter how the media spins, it is uncontrovertably clintoon's mega-screw-up. If we see dem spinners becoming angry during interviews, we'll know that the camel's back may have been broken, right in time for Nov 5th.

Legislation they can live with or overturn later. But to the ardent leftist, the Judiciary is the Holy Grail. They are in a panic that the Senate will fall to the Republicans in November, which will subvert their tactic of bottling up Judicial nominees in commitee. And then there are the upcoming appointments to the SCOTUS. The libs absolutely dread a Republican President and Senate.

You're on the right track. They experienced the "power" of "Leftist justice" when Clinton was permitted to "overtake" the judicial system. Why do you think the Leftists fear justices who interpret the Constitution as it as written?

Despite the overtly political nature of the ad, I'm guessing PFAW is considered "non-partisan" and hence contributions to it are tax deductible?

I think the stipulations are they cannot single out and support one candidate. This ad does not seem to support anyone, just tells people not to vote for a "group" of people. I don't like it, but I'm afraid they are probably well within their free speech rights.

It's probably legal if they use issue advocacy.

Ever see those ads that say "Call John Smith, and tell him to stop supporting such and such?"

That's issue advocacy, and perfectly legal until the McStain /FindGold bill that Bush signed goes into effect

We're getting even closer. Where were unemployment and the surplus before the Leftists took over Congress (Jeffords)? After basically 1 1/2 years of Leftist congressional regine, who does America really have to fear?

Dear Tumbleweed:

You asked about some of the economy numbers. I found some interesting stuff to consider.

Lindsey Graham was on Meet the Press, and Rush Limbaugh reported it on his website: "The best bite of Lindsey Graham from Sunday's Meet the Press relates to the tiny Bush tax cut. Democrats claim that it's responsible for all of our economic woes, the loss of two million jobs, a $157 billion deficit, blah, blah, blah. Graham responded to this line with facts, saying, "When the Democrats took over control of the Senate in May of 2001, the stock market was at 11,000. As of Friday it was at 7,500."

"Thank you Jim Jeffords! Graham continued, "When the Democrats took control of the Senate in May of 2001, the budget surplus was $236 billion. It's now $157 billion in the red. The unemployment rate, when the Democrats took over the Senate in May of 2001 was 4.4%. Now it's 5.6%. You can use my chart to make a point that the Democratic Senate is responsible for our problems, but the truth is we're all in it together and we need to fix it together."

"In addition, the Bush tax cut has totaled $40 billion so far. It can't possibly be responsible for a $157 deficit that's nearly four times its size! Simple math tells you that. Besides, we know from the Bob Novak column and Commerce Department numbers that the Clinton administration inflated numbers from 10% to 30% to exaggerate profits their last couple years. Tom Daschle sat on virtually every important piece of legislation so that he would be able to blame lack of action in these areas on the Republicans. It's a fact, folks. Learn it, and proclaim it from the mountaintops." End of quote.

And I also heard the other day that the unemployment numbers are lower today than they were when our former rapist-in-chief said that the economy was in the best shape ever! We've posted three quarters of steady growth out of the Bubba recession.

What are the chances that we'll win in Iraq-pretty good.

What are the chances that the recession will last 2 more years-pretty low.

Who has more incumbents up for office in 2004-the rats.

So if we have peace, prosperity, which occur under a republican congress and a popular president what are the Rats looking at in the 2004.

If they hold onto the Senate at least they can share some credit and hold back the economy a little.

These people think Lott and Hatch are right-wingers????? Are they allowed to cross the street without their mommies being around?

They came out against a specific party. That is the violation that changes it from being an "issue ad". No one ever seems to get cited for 5013c violations anymore (except for the ocassional church that has issue literature available, of course Rat candidates are of free liberty to speak from the altar in Church (especially on the eve of the election)).

"against a specific party"

So who's going to launch a complaint against them?? They need to make a stink out of it.
