Lost: 2,900 sex offenders. We swear they were right here just a minute ago. Not all are housebroken or declawed. If located, do not try returning them yourself. Contact the Wisconsin Department of Corrections; we'll send a guy with a net. Reward? Not with a billion dollar state budget deficit there ain't. You might want to refrain from asking all your neighbors if they're the pervs the state is looking for. People hate that.
Our state needs help.
The Department of Corrections has mislaid nearly one-third of the registered sex offenders in Wisconsin, according to a report this week.
You can probably understand how that can happen just from your own life. It's like losing your glasses or trying to remember where you set the car keys. One minute the sex offender is right there on the couch and the next he's gone without a trace, except for that oily spot on the cushion.
I say we all pitch in and help find these molesters, rapists and pedophiles and return them to the homes where they obviously don't have enough supervision.
This is one of the reasons why words like probation and monitoring don't leave law-abiding citizens with a high degree of confidence. Some of these creeps you'd have to put on master-probation.
I typed in the address for the state's sex offender Web site and my computer balked and reported: "The page cannot be found. The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed or is temporarily unavailable." Hey, just like those slippery sex offenders, I'm thinking. Man, even the Web site is lost.
But I tried again and this time the repository of neighbors from hell popped up on my screen. I found that nine of these guys - and they are all guys - live in my ZIP code, 53213. I should take comfort in that single-digit number; three of the ZIP codes around me - 53208, 53210 and 53214 - have 71, 73 and 52 respectively.
Then I called Sally Tess in Madison. She's the director of the Wisconsin Bureau of Offender Programs. I asked how many of these nine are lost. She checked the records.
"There are a couple of them from that area under investigation as to location and making them compliant," she said.
In other words, they vamoosed. They're out there somewhere doing God knows what.
Return to sender Two of the nine failed to return letters confirming their current residences, which means they could be sipping umbrella drinks in the Caribbean by now. The Corrections Department has specialists whose job it is to track down these sex offenders, but the bad news is that the Milwaukee area has only one person in that job, which makes for many scattering sheep and one shepherd.
I told Tess I'd help out and see if I could find these two offenders in my own neighborhood. She sounded suspicious.
Neither of them was listed in our newspaper archives, meaning their sex crimes were not deemed newsworthy. The offender Web site does not list addresses as a safeguard against vigilantes and other assorted neighborhood nuts staging reverse welcome wagon parties for these unwelcome newcomers.
One of the men I couldn't find listed anywhere. The other one was in the telephone book, so I called him up to let him know that the State of Wisconsin has been worried sick about him. He doesn't call. He doesn't write. Frankly, he's giving sex offenders a bad name.
I wanted to tell him all that, but he never called me back. As the state has already learned, you simply can't rely on sex offenders to meet you halfway.
So I left a message for Sally Tess at the corrections office, saying it looks like we're down to 2,899 missing offenders.
Now let's get out there and find the rest. The task is a bit like fighting terrorism, though. There's no end in sight. Many of these sex criminals are registered for life. That's a lot of tracking.
C'mon, sex offenders, work with us here.

Here's one to keep an eye on.
Photos NOT available.
If you see a woman w/o makeup and not wearing clothing even close to a lable of "current fashion",chances are, you are in the presence of a single mother.
I am not anti-men.I am not naively trusting of men either. It is a fact that it is dangerous to allow a "non-father" into contact of the household of a single mother.
JUST THE WAY IT IS.
Nine more years, and I will "socialise" again. It is hard for normal, two parent couples to understand just how prevelant the perverts who live among us are!But the peverts dont care if the target is the child of a "perfect" couple or a "single parent".
The perverts just seek the next victum.
