Lebanon vet's license suspended (update to vet beats dogs story)

Lebanon vet's license suspended

A state board has suspended the license of a Lebanon veterinarian who admitted hitting and kicking his animal patients in order to restrain them.

In addition to the six-month suspension, the Board of Veterinary Medicine gave John Carmody two years' probation. Carmody also must undergo a psychological evaluation and take classes in animal behavior, animal restraint and ethics.

The board handed down its decision after an eight-hour hearing in Gardiner.

The case came to light in April after former employees of the Forest View Veterinary Clinic told authorities that Carmody had mistreated some of the animals placed in his care.

Carmody last month signed a stipulation stating that he had injured or beaten dogs under his care. But at yesterday's hearing, he denied abusing animals, saying it's sometimes necessary to use force to get them under restraint.

The guy admitted to hitting and kicking the animals. That's terrible. That's like smacking around a little kid. If that's his way of dealing with animals, he needs to find another profession.

Huh! Always good to hear how things turn out! Thanks for the follow up!

I imagine it will be hard for him to find a clinic to work in now... Probably just as well...

I gave him the benefit of the doubt last go around, if I recall, thinking perhaps he had just gotten burned out and forgotten what his mission was. But I guess they found there was something to it.

There are too many good folk who want to be vets, we don't need him. My critters deserve patience, and so do I, for my money!

I moved from NY to NY a few years ago.
Our Vets in NY were wonderful with my four tough guy Shar-Peis.(Staten Island-Richmond Vally-Dr. Kinnear)

Upon moving, we tried another vet. One of my babies had a bad ear infection and was in a lot of pain. She was fiesty with the new vet (typical Shar-Pei) and muzzled.

Suddenly an older female assistant came in, grabbed my dog near her ear and started pulling her skin and yelling at her! (St. George's Vet-Avenel, NJ) My daughter and I grabbed this moron, threw her up against the wall and told her we would break her face and other vital body parts if she touched the dog again.

Needless to say, we now make the trip back to Staten Island (20 min) to our original Vets. The dogs just seem to know that these guys really care and are much calmer and even happy there.

LOL! Up against the wall huh!

I have had great, good and mediocre vets too, and much of the difference is in temperament. It is hard to find a person that is good with both the animal and the person! When in doubt I have gone with the one that was good with the animal. My current horse vet is that way. He is wonderful with the horse, but fairly hard to talk to. I can deal with that. He is the best horse vet in town.

When I moved north for awhile I too tried a different vet's office, who had a policy that they take the dogs alone back to be weighed, and they didn't want the owner present. I had a very nervous dog who was abused as a youngster... and when they tried to lead her away from me, she wouldn't go. When they picked her up, she peed all over them... It was a stupid rule they had that customers couldn't go in the back. Made things much harder than they had to be. Some dogs are freaked enough by the experience without having some stranger lead them off. My lab, on the other hand, would go anywhere with anyone! - Oh well...

The good vet has a scale that seems to be part of the floor.
The animals just stand on it, no lifting, and the weight registers on a screen overhead. Very easy on all of us.

Suspended is just a good start.

Permenantly Revoked would be better.

Thank you for the update. One reason this SOB got in trouble is because he beat a little Italian Greyhound to death. For those who don't know, and Italian Greyhound is a memeber of the Toy Group of dogs (also includes such "fearsome" dogs as Chihuahuas, Yorkshire and Silky terriers, Toy Poodles, Pomeranians, and similar tiny dogs).

The IG's weigh all of 12–14 pounds soaking wet, and are tiny, fragile versions of Whippets and Greyhounds. A good stiff breeze of, oh, 3 or 4 miles an hour could knock them over. An IG's body is narrow, its entire head could fit in the palm of a teenage girl's hand, and it's legs have a smaller diameter than a chunky pencil.

Any vet, ANY vet who cannot control such a small, defenseless dog almost with his eyes closed, is not worthy of the trust that his clients place in him. So this SOB should have lost his license permanently.

Example of an Italian Greyhound, the type of dog this scumbag of a "vet" killed through brutality:

The size of the dog tags in relation to the size of the dog should give you a good idea of just how small these dogs are. There is no way — NO WAY — a dog approximately a foot tall could have behaved to cause anyone remotely familiar with dogs to be unable to control it easily. The SOB is not a vet, he's a savage and a coward to take his savagery out on such a tiny, defenseless animal.
