I moved from NY to NY a few years ago.
Our Vets in NY were wonderful with my four tough guy Shar-Peis.(Staten Island-Richmond Vally-Dr. Kinnear)

Upon moving, we tried another vet. One of my babies had a bad ear infection and was in a lot of pain. She was fiesty with the new vet (typical Shar-Pei) and muzzled.

Suddenly an older female assistant came in, grabbed my dog near her ear and started pulling her skin and yelling at her! (St. George's Vet-Avenel, NJ) My daughter and I grabbed this moron, threw her up against the wall and told her we would break her face and other vital body parts if she touched the dog again.

Needless to say, we now make the trip back to Staten Island (20 min) to our original Vets. The dogs just seem to know that these guys really care and are much calmer and even happy there.

LOL! Up against the wall huh!

I have had great, good and mediocre vets too, and much of the difference is in temperament. It is hard to find a person that is good with both the animal and the person! When in doubt I have gone with the one that was good with the animal. My current horse vet is that way. He is wonderful with the horse, but fairly hard to talk to. I can deal with that. He is the best horse vet in town.

When I moved north for awhile I too tried a different vet's office, who had a policy that they take the dogs alone back to be weighed, and they didn't want the owner present. I had a very nervous dog who was abused as a youngster... and when they tried to lead her away from me, she wouldn't go. When they picked her up, she peed all over them... It was a stupid rule they had that customers couldn't go in the back. Made things much harder than they had to be. Some dogs are freaked enough by the experience without having some stranger lead them off. My lab, on the other hand, would go anywhere with anyone! - Oh well...
