Torch Transfers Campaign Warchest to Lautenberg
ABC News Poitical Insider Tip Sheet 'The Note' ^ | October 2,2 002 | Mark Halperin

Posted on 10/02/2002 8:03:42 AM PDT by tip of the sword

The Trenton Times said Lautenberg 'has indicated that he is willing to pay for much of his campaign,' but Roll Call reported yesterday that Lautenberg said he won't.

The paper also dramatically raises the prospect that Torch 'wages a guerilla war' now against the Lautenberg campaign.

But, ouch, one Democrat declared yesterday the Toricelli 'is no longer relevant to the Democratic Party. He's going to learn that very quickly.'

'After Pallone dropped out (yesterday) Tooicelli was eventually persuaded to let his war chest be used by Lautenberg, the Bergen Record says.

The only positive development out of this is picturing Torch's agony as he hands his money and his seat of power over to his arch enemy and fades into obscurity.

IMHO Torch only did this with a promise that Lousenberg wouldn't fill his spot. The Dems assured him and then nailed him from behind the second that speech was over. Nice to know that the Pubbies aren't the only ones to eat their own.

Is Torch creepier than Bonior?

"Pentagon says at least one US serviceman killed in bombing near Philippines "

Will Baghdad Bonior offer comfort to the men who killed this young serviceman, or maybe spit in the eye of the young man's mother? How about calling his Commander and Chief a liar? Come on creepy democrats, step up to the plate.

Blast it, anyway! This is SO WRONG!!! You don't GET to just make up the rules as you go along, and trash the existing rules you don't like!

Darn these fool Demo-voters! One day, I>they too will wish there were a Rule of Law!

I didn't think that FEC rules allowed folks to 'turn over' their war chests to another candidate. Not that the Dems would be worried about breaking the rules, mind you, but at least it is something they can be 'called on'. I'm glad to see the Repubs. going into court over the whole Torch thing. Can't wait to see what the NJ Supremes do with it!

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Torticelli get to keep his
campaign warchest if he resigns. Knowing his sticky
fingers, giving his warchest to Lautenberg could be a
sticky issue. That may be why he wanted to end the
campaign early -- so that he can keep what he had left in
his campaign funds.

Maybe this is a stupid question that has been addressed earlier, but isn't there a limit on how much can be contributed to a Senate campaign. How can the Torricelli legally transfer millions(?) of dollars to the Lautenberg campaign? If this is possible, then it would represent a MAJOR loophole in any campaign finance reform. Want to get more money to your Senate candidate? Contribute to the campaigns of the other 48 senators (of your party) and have them transfer it to your guy.

I thought it was illegal for one candidate to give their campaign cont. to another? That would allow one individual to cicumvent the individual contribution limits.

In theory a rich person could start a campaign fund, fill it up with his own money, quit the race, and then give the money to another candidate.

I think so. In yesterday's legal analyses I read that Torch could only give $1000 of his campaign fund to new (IMPROVED!) Rat candidate. But he could give the balance to the DNC, who could in turn give to .... You get the picture. Yeah, the Rats are all for campaign finance reform, long as they get to keep playing these games.

If Republican voters get off their rear-ends on election day and vote NO candidate can defeat them. However, if only
30 or 40% (or less) turn out then they get exactly what they
deserve. If this fiasco doesn't energize the Republican
masses in New Jersey then they might as well close their
headquarters, fold their tents and go out of business.

I would have thought that the money should be returned to the donors. That could present a problem, however, considering Torrecelli probably doesn't keep very good records.

The New Jersey democRAT fix is in!

Every GOP candidate across America who is behind by more than 20% in a statewide race should immediately quit and demand a more electable replacement for the November 5th election.

Demand a competitive election!
