Streisand Wrongly Attributes Quote

LOS ANGELES, Oct 01, 2002 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- Barbra Streisand said Tuesday she mistakenly attributed a quote to William Shakespeare during her performance at a fund-raising concert for the Democratic Party.

The singer recited lines she believed were penned by the 16th century playwright during her Sunday appearance, which raised about $6 million for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

The quotation was given to her by a friend who found it, attributed on the Internet to the Shakespeare play "Julius Caesar," Streisand publicist Dick Guttman said.

Streisand, a longtime Democratic supporter, urged the party's leaders to stand up against what she considers to be misplaced Republican aggression toward Iraq and the erosion of civil liberties under President Bush.

The quote began: "Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind."

The misquote was originally reported Tuesday by Internet reporter Matt Drudge.

Streisand said she didn't realize she was misattributing the remark - but still believes in the statement.

"The authorship of this is important. But it doesn't detract from the fact that the words themselves are powerful and true and beautifully written," she said in a statement.

Without trying to sound too highbrow about it, what this says more than anything else is that Streisand has no ear for Shakespeare. Not only was this quote debunked shortly after 911, when it first appeared on the net, by Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit and others, but it's also clearly hugely inferior to Shakespeare's standards and uses parts of speech that are not in the least Shakespearian!

First, she misspelled words in her memo, and then blamed it on her assistant. Now she wrongly and publicly attributes this quote to Shakespeare, and then she again blames it on her assistant. Like a true Rat of her generation, she refuses to take responsibility for her mistakes and instead she blames them on someone else. Not that I take anything about this story at face value. Neither did I the other one. Lies, lies, lies! But Babs, do tell, what did the assistant type into the search engine? Was it the word "patriotism?"

Democrats and liberals don't like facts. Facts and laws are simply obstacles to be overcome. If you run up against one, you just roll over it and say whatever you want. The most recent example of this comes from Barbra Streisand.

Yes, Matt Drudge has caught the re-re-re-retired entertainer totally making up quotes by William Shakespeare in her big-money fund-raiser over the weekend. Barbara credited a fake quote that Bill never wrote. She was stung by one of these massive spam e-mails that liberals are famous for sending around.

They make up quotes, attribute them to famous people like Nostradamas, and send them around in spam. Drudge blew the lid off this story on Tuesday morning and featured the details on his website. Never mind looking it up, Barbra, much less ever having picked up a copy of Shakespeare so that you know how to identify his quotes.


Streisand: Whoever Duped Me is a Genius!



I predicted that Streisand would just weasel out of admitting she'd been duped by saying it didn't matter that the quote was fake - and we had a nearly instantaneous See, I Told You So! As liberals always do, she insisted that facts didn't matter. She told the Washington Post that using the fake quote "doesn't detract from the fact that it was powerful and true and beautifully written."

The foolishness goes on, "Whoever wrote it is damn talented. I hope he's writing his own play." That's her escape. Compare this to last week, when I refused to talk about that Internet e-mail citing the Real Man Test until I could cite Dave Barry as the source.

Mrs. Brolin fell for an Internet hoax here, attributing something to Shakespeare and Caesar that was never said or written, and stands by it nevertheless. It's going in the Washington Post. Drudge has been calling her, but she won't return calls from anyone but Dick Gephardt. I guess if anyone wants to quote her, she figures they can just make up quotes and send them out over the Internet.

AP's headline is blatently false. Barbra(sp)'s error was not that she wrongly attributed the quote but that she fell for a hoax that purported that this fictional quote was made by Shakespeare/Caesar.

She got caught falling for an internet rumor and has posted her "correction" on her website under a page that indicates that people should not be quick to believe everything that they read about her on the net - too bad she does not follow her own advice about the net.

No where does Barbra(sp) acknowledge that this was a hoax. In fact she still applauds the "beautiful" writing and the message.
