IM OFFENDED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted on 10/01/2002 8:47:23 AM PDT by repub32

"IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT!!" I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans. Although this patriotism is mostly an emotional response and doesn't usually culminate in any patriotic activity other than flag waving, it is nonetheless inspiring that most Americans have finally awakened from a very long sleep. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the politically correct crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others (which, by the way, offends the hell out of me). I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America. Our population is almost entirely composed of descendants of immigrants. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of America being a multi-cultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language! If Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. This is my country and if you're offended by the way I run it or my belief systems then you have some serious choices to make, but one of them is NOT that I should change to accommodate you. This is MY COUNTRY, my land, and my lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives every citizen the right to express his/her opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so. But, once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our pledge, our national motto, or our way ofencourage you to take advantage of one other great American freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE. If you agree, pass it on. If you don't agree, pass it on anyway. What the hell! This is AMERICA, after all!

Amen! Both of my parents, my maternal grandmother and paternal grandparents were immigrants to this country. They felt they were so lucky to have been able to come here, they believed it was their responsibility to adapt and adopt the lifestyles, culture, and values of the new country that had taken them in. Coming here is a privilege...it isn't a right. Immigrants should assimilate themselves into the culture of the country they have chosen to settle in. They should not expect those that have come before them, to change their way of life in order to accomodate them.

Great post!

We need to adopt English as the official language of the US. This will save the taxpayers tons in the printing costs of redundant forms in other languages alone.

PS We are all decendants of immigrants. There is no such thing as a Native American. Even the Indians came from Asia.

When in Rome, as they say.

We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change....

Well, there are a few things we (I) would like to change, but never-you-mind that.

I believe the original source of this is Barry Loudermilk, an Air Force veteran. If I remember correctly, it was first published in a small Georgia newspaper, The Bartow Trader or something.

This thing has many different variations but I'm pretty sure that Loudermilk's rant is the source of all of them.

Yes! I lived in a foreign country. When I went out and engaged with the citizenry of that country, I spoke their language. I learned a great deal of the language in the first 90 days I was there. Enough that I could engage in commerce, return items to the store, get my hair cut AND colored (no small feat), engage in small talk with neighbors. I knew I was leaving and didn't have any desire or intent to stay but I felt it was my obligation as a guest in that country to respect the language and culture.

I was born here. That makes me a native American (as I'm inclined to indicate whenever my ethnic background is asked). My ancestors? They came from Europe. They weren't native Americans, poor things.
