If this story has legs, you have to wonder how an illiterate like Paddlyn Madelyn would have the smarts to pull off child-switching and think she could get away with it. Must be an incredible amount of arrogance mixed in with all that ignorance.

I was just reading the thread and heard on CTV that the mom has been charged with an additional crime of giving false info to police. Seems all her addresses were strip malls. Her hubby has one of the fake addresses on his drivers liscense.

They may be best known for their scam against Disney World at one of their hotels for a staged rape. Turns out is was the brother of the rape victim that was dressed up in a Micky Mouse outfit and actually raped and beat her to make it look real.

What a sick story. I vaguely remember this, but I don't think I ever heard the whole story.

I would imagine this little girl and her siblings will become part of their 'heritage' - the traveling con "family" once the authorities give them back because the mom cried for the camera, and America wants to forgive her now.

At least she didn't drown the kids one by one like that murdering mom in texas.

(1) They don't want anyone else to know about them.

(2) They don't interact much with people outside their little group.

(3) They are constantly on the move.

(4) Our media's pathological fear of "stereotyping" makes quite sure that precious few exposes of this "community" are written or filmed.

The various news programs such as 60 Minutes and Dateline or so had shown their home movies that includes parties, match making and their weddings not to mention their brags about the scams they pull. Their status is relied upon those that pull off the biggest (money) scams for single acts and overall life time (sort of like RBI's and home runs). I would expect a return of these programs very soon.

In 1992, a brother-sister team of Irish Travelers created a rape-and-robbery scenario in a Walt Disney World hotel. Wanda Mary Normile, a k a Wanda Mary Burke, a k a Wanda Mary Cleveland, a k a Leah Ann Kelly, then 21, had consensual sex with a partner (who didn't know about the scam) in a nearby hotel, so that there would be evidence of recent sexual contact. She then got a room at the Caribbean Beach Resort on Disney property, and, with her consent, her 33-year-old brother bound her to a bed with duct tape and beat her repeatedly with a stick. Normile then contacted police and told a horrifying tale of being beaten, raped and robbed by a man "in a Dracula costume" while her 10-month-old daughter was in the room.

Several months after reporting the "rape" to police, Normile filed suit against Disney, which offered her a $200,000 settlement. She refused the money and asked for more than $1 million, but the hoax was uncovered after investigators received a tip from a disgruntled relative.

The brother died of an undisclosed illness in March 1994. Two months later, Normile pleaded guilty to grand theft and falsely reporting a crime, and was sentenced to 3-1/2 years in prison.

It's prejudice don't ya know? Because they are Irish Travelers they are being discriminated against. They are not scam artists or criminals or child beaters...they are Irish Travelers and therefore deserving of preferential treatment due to the overwhelming prejudice and lack of opportunity they have had to deal with in the past. They don't have to follow the law like the rest of us. THEY
ARE EXEMPT....because they are Irish Travelers. The newest ethnic group in the US to be exempt from the laws and the rules that the rest of us must adhere to.

I find it very hard to believe that the "girl" in protective services would not some how tell she was someone else.

It is likely that the beating we saw was the result of the four year old saying or doing something that was 'risky' to her 'family'. These people raise their children from early-on to abide by their codes of conduct. They are of a pack mentality.

They could find another four-yr-old to play the part. One who doesn't want the beating the other was given.

Actually I remember seeing a TV real-life cop show, where a toddler was being carted off as her drunk druggie mother cried and screamed "Please, don't take my baby!" with high volume and drama. The child looked UTTERLY unconcerned and was focusing her attention on the nice social worker lady who was carrying her. Kinda convicted the mother right on the spot, as far as I was concerned.

I really don't think it's that simple. DNA testing can prove someone is NOT the parent of a child, but as far as I know it can't prove conclusively that someone IS the parent. With the notorious inbreeding of this clan, a substitute child would almost certainly be a close cousin, with a great deal of common ancestry with the right child (ist cousins on both sides, or something like that).
