Baseball's back - your opinion

Posted on 08/30/2002 9:30:27 AM PDT by Tumbleweed_Connection

1-Why did this agreement have to be made the day after the final day of the contract expiration?

2-Who deserves more, players or fans?

3-How do you feel about the players overall situation?

4-Why is this only a 4 year extension?

5-What happened to the fan's game besides supporting higher costs?

6-How do you feel about all of those fans who made other plans today and lose the use of tickets? The fans who cancelled weekend trips because of the "last minute" decision.

7-How far can fans support the game and how do you factor fan disgust?

Where does the player ceiling end?

I don't care about their day-after deal. Baseball players suck and I'm done with MLB permanently.

I could care less, the fact that it went this long has already put me off.

If anything I'm bummed that they didn't strike.

so what? They are waaaaay over paid for such a boring sport.
Now, if after hitting the ball, the batter keeps the bat and has to go from base to base and do battle with the guy that was defending the base, that would be worth watching.

This is good news because

(1.) After today, MLB won't be in the news anymore.
(2.) We won't have whining, bellyaching "fan victims" paraded on the evening news. And
(3.) The media will be forced to spare us another rich-poor dichotomy story.

Now, MLB will retreat back into the bowels of the middle of the sports section of the paper where I can easily ignore it.

If I want a baseball fix, I'll go for Little League reruns or go out to catch a quality (college-age) game in the
Alaska Baseball Summer League.

Pro Players in general make me sick with their bad attitudes and even worse example for our kids.

1-Why did this agreement have to be made the day after the final day of the contract expiration?
--- Brinksmanship.

2-Who deserves more, players or fans?
--- More what?

3-How do you feel about the players overall situation?
--- Rich guys wanting to get richer - capitalists...

4-Why is this only a 4 year extension?
--- See #3

5-What happened to the fan's game besides supporting higher costs?
--- Fans will come back - always have.

6-How do you feel about all of those fans who made other plans today and lose the use of tickets? The fans who cancelled weekend trips because of the "last minute" decision.
--- So they should strike anyway, because a few fans made other plans? Hardly.

7-How far can fans support the game and how do you factor fan disgust?
--- Fans are disgusted every time. So what? Nobody cares.

Where does the player ceiling end?
--- When fans DO get disgusted enough to quit coming to the parks and TVs.

DRATS! And golf is still televised, too.

I gave up on baseball 30 years ago, while watching a game. The pitcher throws a "ball". Manager strolls out to mound, chats with pitcher, strolls back to dugout.

Pitcher throws another "ball." Manager strolls out to mound, chats with pitcher, strolls back to dugout.

Pitcher throws another "ball." Manager strolls out to mound, chats with pitcher, strolls back to dugout.

Manager points to batting cage. Manager and new pitcher stroll out to mound. All 3 chat. Manager and old pitcher stroll off to dugout.

New pitcher throws a "ball." Manager strolls out to mound, chats with pitcher, strolls back to dugout.

I turned baseball off. In 45 minutes 4 pitches were made in total.

Cal Ripken's Aberdeen Ironbirds continue to sell out. Real old-fashioned baseballl, the way it was meant to be. Reasonable ticket prices. Nobody's getting rich: not the owner, not the player.

Life the way it should be. ANYBODY have extra tickets to this weekends' Ironbird game against the Expos? I'm totally wanting to go, but they're sold out. Orioles, on the other hand, probably aren't sold out.

Who needs Major League. The minors do just fine.

I quit baseball years ago, when the players started making the big money, incentive was gone, up to the plate, swing from the heels three times and sit down.

Many was the time of an inning with three singles a double or two and no homeruns. They were paid to "HIT" the ball. Now everyone is a "swinger", singles are accidents. Have not attended a game in years and never will again.

Sports fans are almost as stupid as the players, who cares about such insignificant activities like sports they mean nothing they prove nothing they are totally useless.

Sadly they brats settled.

I was hoping that there was going to be a strike.

With a strike, the fans win and both the owners and the players lose.

With a settlement, the fans lose and the rich and greedy players and owners win.

Why aren't fan levels where they were before the last strike? I realize teams have been added, but percentages don't support attentance increases.

"I don't care about their day-after deal."

DITTO. This was the first year that I didn't make it to even ONE Major League game - couldn't afford it - juggling bills as it is, new baby, pay freeze, etc. (hmmm, do I buy groceries this month, or go to a game?)
Yea, I'm REAL sympathetic...

The only opinions you will get on this thread are the same ones who have been posting for the last couple weeks. "Baseball is boring." "I left baseball a long time ago." "It's baseball season?" "I'm finished with baseball, I'll never watch baseball again." Sorta like the constant "I'll never vote for George Bush again because he doesn't do everything I want him to do."

Personally, I love the game of baseball. Had the strike gone through I would have been highly pissed and would have sounded just like that. As it is, I'm still pissed. But at least we get to see the rest of this season and hopefully see the Diamondbacks repeat and kick the Yankees butts again. And I hope Sammy Sosa is able to play and breaks the home run record for the year. (I know that is really dreaming) I also hope the intelligent people in baseball work really hard to correct what is wrong with the people who control the game. Yeah, yeah, I'm an eternal optimist.

I've been to 1 game since '94 (free tickets.) My TV/radio "strike" begins today - I won't be watching or listening any more this year. I've watched or listened to about 50% of the Braves games this year.

I had been a fan all my life. I even made a feeble attempt to come back after the last strike. I walked away from it upon hearing about the obscene Alex Rodriguez contract.
