Daylight Savings Time
August 28, 2002 | Me

Admit it, Saskatchewan has failed to convince the rest of Canada Daylight Savings Time (DST) is bad. No province has adopted DST only to revoke it later. The rest of Canada was treated to the wonders of "Saskatchewan Time" on federal election night in 1997 when our polling results were delayed until after results from British Columbia because of time zone confusion. More Saskatchewan people than ever conclude that for our own convenience, and to end the confusion of others, this should change. Switching to Central Daylight Time (CDT) in April, 2003 and returning to CST in October, 2003 would painlessly fix the problem. We would have the same time as Winnipeg year-round. Scheduling phone calls, travel, and even TV shows would be much simpler. And Newfoundland, with its clocks set half an hour ahead of the Maritimes, would be the only province left with a dumb time zone policy!

LOL.....We went to ONE Raider game while we were there - the only hockey game I've ever been to....it was horrible. (Even a friend who was from there said the same.)

Newfoundland

Iran has its own timezone. So does Afghanistan. Newfoundland should continue to have its own timezone, too, because it needs something like being the first place in the New World the sun touches every day. What else does it have?

I always find it amusing on FR when people start dividing up the provinces into the U.S.

People are always saying how much they want the West, but that the socialist East can take a flying leap...

Alberta is understandable, as it is essentially Texas north, but the reality of the situation is that BC is WAY left of California, has elected NDP governments routinely (when you here NDP, think Nader and the Green party), and in fact runs annual provincial deficits. They have the worst lib judges in the country. As for Sask and Manitoba, they also run an annual deficits, and both have elected the NDP as their current government. Manitoba is a complete basket case, and aside from the maritime provinces is the biggest drain on the country financially.

One the other hand, Ontario runs a budget surplus, and is far and away the most prosporous province. They have elected consecutive conservative governments, have cut taxes, reformed the welfare system to get thousands off the dole and fought for more provincial autonomy. They also happen to have the lowest crime rate of any region in North America.

When ranking the provinces in terms of most to least conservative, Ontario ranks #2 in all of Canada.

"I thought Alberta had all the money?!.....OIL!!!!"

That they have. In fact, they are secure to the point that they are the only province with no provincial sales tax. But Ontario has things like the bulk of Canadian manufacturing, some of the richest farmland in the world, uranium mines, the other NORAD station, and more fun stuff. Ask all the 19 year old Americans who come up here to drink legally. ;)

More on topic (sort of): Did you know that standard time was invented by a Canadian?

It would make more sense to have DAylight Saving Time year round. Our sleep and wake cycles should be closer to the Sun's. It would save some energy, too.

I think that the reason that Indiana doesn't change their time is the inability of hoosiers to remember whether to set their clocks forward or backwards. Especially forward, they do pretty good at "backward".

DST here in Michigan is a pain in the @ss! We're so far west in the Eastern Time Zone that when we go to EDT in April kids are walking to school in the dark and by May they can't sleep because the sun doesn't set until nearly 10:00 pm.

If the state were in the Central Time Zone, where it belongs, maybe I could accept it.

Ironically, in light of all the government-mandated safety features in cars and workplaces, studies continue to show a marked increase in traffic accidents and job-related injuries during the weeks following the imposition of DST every spring.

Yeah, I smile at that too. BC has been NDP and are now Liberal as is the Yukon. Manitoba and Saskatchewan are NDP and Sask. is the birth place of socialized medicine in Canada. Ontario, N.B., N.S.and PEI all have conservative governments. Alberta has oil and gas , so does Ontario, and the Maritimes. Ontario gold and nickel mines mines rank with the world's largest, along with the silver, zinc, platinum, and soon more diamonds. Manufacturing and the forest industry represent billions in trade surpluses. Fresh water, big sport fish and good beer......

Not true three counties in northwest indiana closest to chicago change thier clocks. I think we are smarter by not changing the clock. Their have been studies that more traffic accidents occur the monday after the change. So, although I am biased, I think we are making the right decision.

Daylight Saving Time is an idiotic idea. There is no rational reason to force people to change their clocks (mechanical, electrical and biological) twice a year.

I agree. If people want to shift their work schedules in the summer, that's fine. Changing clocks is idiotic. My mother used to set her clock 5 minutes ahead so she'd have a bit of margin for getting to work. Of course she got to depend on that an had to increase it to 10 minutes. By the time she retired, her clocks were 40 minutes ahead.

The function of a clock is to provide a standard. There is no reason people can't adjust their schedules around seasons without fooling with the standard.

Give that man a ceegar!.

This biannual disruption in the normal progress of our ordering our lives around the rising and setting of the sun, is an outrage.

It started as "War Time." Jimmy Carter reinstitued it off the "Oil Crisis."

It has not gone away. Why? I reckon so the Yuppies can get in a round of golf, after a full day of pride and plunder, Yet, tomorrow morning, children will wait in the dark for the school bus.

Stop the insanity.

I hate so-called savings time. ALL "conervatives" should hate it. Twice a year, our normal daily schedule of sleeping and awakening is disrupted. I know that it's irritating to change the clocks but being out of synch with most of North America is more irritating. "Saskatchewan Time" is Mountain Time in the summer and Central Time in the winter, which is bloody confusing to residents and non-residents alike. The ideal would be for North America to drop Daylight Saving Time and just stay on Standard Time year-round. But like I said in the first sentence of the original post, Saskatchewan has failed to convince others that DST is bad.
