POST-MEETING REPORT:
The first meeting of the newly re-organized NC chapter took place at Howlin's house on Saturday, 08/24/2002.
This chapter, called the "Old North State Freepers", has over 35 members.
The following Freepers attended:

Howlin's husband & mother
Future Snake Eater's girlfriend
On the evening of Saturday, August 24, 2002, we all met at Howlin's house in Raleigh.
I primarily intended this to be a meeting where we could all get acquainted with one another. Everyone brought an appetizer to eat, and everything was delicious! Some of us brought beer or wine, some did not, but we all had a great time discussing politics & the news in Howlin's kitchen and on her deck.
Since I am new at this, I did not really have a set agenda for the meeting except for a general discussion of future goals and direction of the chapter. We talked about the fact that
callisto, our Piedmont Triad Chapter Leader, has reserved a web page for us. Further discussion ensued about page content, using it as a clearinghouse for NC legislative contact information and media links. For possible inclusion on a future web page, I would like for you all to post:
- Media links & contacts (North Carolina TV, newspapers online).
- Legislative contacts.
- Information about your districts and if you think we can make a difference there.
- Links to candidate and voting district information.
- Your thoughts about the future direction of this chapter... be honest!
- Any other information you think pertinent.
I thank you in advance for your time, and apologize for taking a few days to post the report. In fact, I am staying a bit later at work just so I can type this thread.
NC FReepers, I want to actually try and effect a change in NC politics, not just talk about it. I know that sounds ambitious, but I believe if we work within our strengths and target our energies effectively, we CAN and WILL make a difference.
Election Day is just around the corner. The recent redistricting has afforded us a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Let's make something of it!
FRegards,
Constitution Day

Where is Howlin? Don't have a clue, unfortunately I've not been on much this week either d/t MIL's visit. Only one more day to go and I'll be able to get back to FR on a full-time basis.

Their mission statement from their "about us" page:
"What CSE does:
Citizens for a Sound Economy recruits, educates, trains and mobilizes hundreds of thousands of volunteer activists to fight for less government, lower taxes, and more freedom."

An "I miss Rocky Mount" bump.
Hey CD, was that tinfoil hat photo that Howlin posted the other day from your Saturday meeting? If it was, that is just too weird... same thing happened at our meeting.

The Triad ABC affiliate no longer has local news programming. It was abandoned due to insufficient revenue vs production costs. They do have ABC network links on their homepage.

I search and found some resources I was previously unaware of:
Newspapers:
Elkin Tribune
Elkin, NC

I haven't looked at this one as thoroughly as I will, but it appears to have all the "little" papers linked:
Center For Virtual Appalachia
Local News for the Appalachian Counties of North Carolina

Thanks for the CSE link.
We are lucky to have such an active chapter of CSE in our state fighting for smaller govt. locally. I believe they have definitely had an impact. The GOP legislators, especially the ones who signed "the pledge" to not increase taxes, call CSE quite often for their stand on bills before voting. One of their slogans is "We Want Less"
They are working on a brochure with all the candidates and where they stand on issues as well as voting history.

Thanks to Howlin and her Hubby and Mom for being so gracious and making our first meeting/party a success! I really thought it was a good start and believe we can have a greater impact on our state's politics as a group than with each one of us working individually.
We have a couple of things we can do now. Please Freep mail me if you are interested:
1-NC GOP Party is working to get EVERY Republican out to vote for the general election this time. They say if we can increase our turnout just 5%, we can win most races. If you are interested in making phone calls in your precinct, please let me know. I will need your precinct number to "plug you in".
2-Let me know if you would be interested in working at the GOP booth at the State Fair. I have done this for the past 2 years and its alot of fun. We could hopefully find a time when we could all work together maybe one morning and then go for lunch or one afternoon and go for dinner. Just an idea.
Howlin and Constitution Day have already said they were interested...Anyone else?
