The writer of an Aug. 21 letter to the editor wanted to know why there was no outrage about the eviction of white farmers in Zimbabwe.

Colonialism has raped, pillaged, abused and taken advantage of the continent of Africa for hundreds of years. Only a few countries have been brave enough to stand against it. White Zimbabweans control 80 percent of the fertile land there and account for only 5 percent of the population. As in the Republic of Congo, people native to the area are taking back the land that belongs to them. They are also educating their people.

I applaud their efforts and wish more African nations would follow suit. May the motherland forever fight colonialism.

Ignorance reigns supreme. Europeans were unable to invade most of Africa until less than 150 years ago due to the virulent diseases endemic to the region. The average lifespan of a trader on the West African coast before about 1870 was less than a year. Only the Portugese were able to build significant empires in sub-Saharan Africa before then, due to their substantial quantum of African ancestry.

Most of Africa wasn't colonized till very late in the 19th century and was then freed by 1960. Colonialism in most of Africa lasted much less than a century.

Dear Ricardo, you historically illiterate moron, blacks and whites moved into southern Africa at just about the same time. The blacks were predominantly cattle herders. The whites, farmers. The blacks were tribal folk with a very low level of technology and education. The whites had the benefit of having come from one of the world's most advanced civilizations. The blacks had a much higher birthrate than the whites. In this situation, it was pretty much inevitable that the whites (not because they were white) would end up having fewer, but richer, people than the blacks and that the blacks would be working mostly for the whites.

Perhaps Ricardo thinks food comes from the store. This is just a guess, but FARMERS tend to own land in much greater proportion than their percentage of the population.
