With President Bush away for a month, a noisy horde of sweaty construction workers and heavy machinery has descended to give the executive mansion a facelift -- about 270 projects ranging from replacing the odd door knob to ripping up and repaving an entire driveway.

"As for those Oval Office floors, they were just redone during Bush's vacation last August. Even though a rug mostly fills the room, one White House regular recalled that the president noticed with his first step inside last year that the job wasn't up to snuff -- the wood had been incorrectly stained against the grain. "

Attention to detail and high standards. What a refreshing and welcome change.

Even though it is over a year, this reminds me of when the Reagans took over in 1981. I remember a story where it was reported that the White House looked like s**t, like white trash moved out. Probably the same with the Clintons.

perhaps, - but it stills sounds a bit excessive for the guy who makes $9.5/hr and walks on vinyl adhered squares - is our money being well spent or squandered?

Yes, I remember that, too. I also remember how the press hammered Nancy Reagan for all her efforts to restore and refurbish the pubilc and private areas.

I expect the Oval Office floors would have been redone right away had 9-11 not happened so soon after the President returned.

Hum, well, gosh, I dunno .... do you live in a structure that is recognized around the world as the residence and official place of business for the Leader of the Free World ? Have historic bills and treaties been signed in your home ? Do you welcome, entertain and sit down to dinner with leaders from around the world on a weekly basis in your dining room ? Have most of the presidents of the United States slept under your roof ?

Other major projects include replacing the $30,000 jogging track on the South Lawn that was custom-built in 1993 for former President Clinton, like his successor an avid runner.

Clinton? An avid runner? (Explorer89 chokes on food....) Do ya' think he could ever match that 20ish minute 3-mile that Bushie did a few weeks ago?? Or that 3:40 marathon W did while Governor?

FOFLOL. Not even in his dreams. I doubt Clinton used that track a half dozen times after he milked all the photo-op opportunites from it. Even his sycophants were grossed out by those flabby, pasty white thighs. BARF.

Thanks, I happy to see it, too. Guess that constant flow in and out of the Lincoln Bedroom prevented regular maintanence during the previous administration.

I see this attention to detail as a means of preserving a historic and significant building. It's so refreshing to see someone in the White House who cares about taking care of it rather than defiling it!
