Not in NY.
You can't shoot a bear, even in self-defense in a lot of areas, without going to jail.
That's a current problem with one of my neighbors. Black bear raiding his garbage, until he sealed it, and now attempts to raid his house.
He can do nothing except call a 1st class citizen.

I should have been more clear. Sorry. My meaning was that tourists, in general, come to this area and behave stupidly. There are some lovely areas that have camps but I have no idea if they are Orthodox or not and some of the signs for the places are in hebrew.
"Don't be so sensitive. You know darn well they're summer camps! Don't make something out of nothing"
"And it's already been posted a few inches above that "The mother was interviewed and reported that the family was moving from their car to the cabin when the bear appeared suddenly. "
I'm not sure what your answer has to do with what I said so I'm unable to respond.

I certainly was wrong! That report puts a whole new light on the matter. I appreciate the update.

I was wrong. Reference posts #62 & #97.

I am going hiking there myself in 3 weeks. I try to go after Memorial Day every year.
Memorial Day is in May...You ment Labor Day maybe?

For some reason, the smaller black bear is more likely than a grizzly to attack a human being for no reason whatsoever. Actually the main reason black bears attack humans is because they want to eat you. Grizzlies mostly attack because you have somehow surprized them, or encroached on their territory. Often once they feel you are no longer a threat they will stop. That's why experts recomend playing dead with a griz. Black bears are more likely to be afraid of humans and will usually withdrawal when surprised (except for mothers with cubs!). So when a black bear is threatening he is probably looking at you as dinner, so playing dead will simply make you an easy meal. Stand tall, wave your arms, yell, throw rocks, pick up a weapon, or punch him in the nose if it comes to it; generally do anything you can to make him look for dinner elsewhere.

One more thing. I'd take the weight of a Freedom Arms .454 shooter with 4 1/2 or 6" barrel on my hip all day anytime compared to that 6 shot 7 1/2" barrel Ruger monster you're packing.

It's better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6?

That's why experts recomend playing dead with a griz. That reminds me of something I read about when you go camping out West, if a rattlesnake crawls into your sleeping bag during the night, you should remember it's only looking for warmth and be sure to lie perfectly still all night until the sun comes up and it will crawl out.

We MUST not forget the two main bear repellants: small bells on our clothing and pepper spray.

In NY, sometimes it's hard to tell the difference.

Oopps yep Labor Day. Well it is a memorial day for me as I can escape the city for 3-4 days and be out with nature and almost no other people or other distractions.

A bear attack in Alaska
The following pictures are of a guy who works for the Forest Service in Alaska. He was out deer hunting. A large world record Grizzly charged him from about 50 yards away. The guy unloaded a 7mm Mag Semi-auto into the bear and it dropped a few feet from him. The monster was still alive so he reloaded and capped it in the head. It was over one thousand six hundred pounds, 12'6" high at the shoulder,14' to the top of his head. It's the largest grizzly bear ever recorded in the world. Of course, the game department did not let him keep it. It will be mounted and put on display at the Anchorage airport (to remind tourist's of the risks involved when in the wild).
Think about it. You would be level with the bears belly button when he stood, he would look you in the eye when walking! This bear on its hind legs could walk up to the average single story house and look over the roof at eye level.
The bear had killed 2 other people. His last meal was the poor fellowon a nature hike. The Forest Service found his 38-caliber emptied. He shot6-times and hit the grizzly 4(they found seven 7mm slugs and four 38 caliber slugs in him) but obviously only wounded him since it was estimated to be 3 days prior to the bears death by the Forest Service man.

"Adirondack State Park is over 6 million acres, lots of bear"
one of the fondest memories of my childhood and even my adulthood is driving to the Old Forge garbage dump and watching the bears....wow....of course, that was many years ago....
but people would just drive up, park, and watch.....it was great fun...

In my book, a 7mm mag is not enough to be walking around with monsters like that.
This kid got lucky.
