Smirnoff Ice racist TV commercial
Posted on 08/17/2002 7:38:31 PM PDT by p-andrews
Has anybody other than me seen the Smirnoff Ice commercial that shows a a group of African-Americans at a party that appears to be attended by ONLY African-Americans? During the commercial, the blacks notice two white guys have showed up at the party. The blacks comment to each other something along the lines of "What are THOSE guys doing here?" or "How did THOSE guys get in here?".. They proceed to make the white guys look like nerds and make a point of the white guys looking out of place at the party.
Now, can you imagine if the commercial had consisted of some white folks partying, maybe at a country club or somewhere? What if the white guys had commented "What are those guys doing here?" about 2 blacks that had showed up at a primarily white party? It would cause quite an uproar I bet.

I haven't seen the commercial but it sounds pretty bad, showing the white guys as "nerds" but also portraying black people as prejudice... If you find it offensive, you should get the e-mail address of the company and start an e-mail campaign to get that commercial off of the air.

I am tired of everyone taking offense to everything.
Please shelve your umbrage....or you become them.

That's pretty much standard procedure now. If you watched "Remember the Titans", you saw where this commercial came from. Same ole, same ole.

It would cause quite an uproar I bet. That's an understatement. The network showing it would be sued into bankruptcy, the company would be boycotted and everybody involved with that commercial would have their careers ruined.

I don't take offense with it. It's the double standard that irks me.
To: p-andrews
Oh yea, I've seen it. The first thing I thought the first time I saw it was 'could you imagine the cries of racism if the actors' races were exchanged'. It's hardly surprising though.
To: p-andrews
No no no--you must be mistaken--the only people that can be racialist are whites.

I don't think anybody is particularly thrilled with ANY of the stereotypes suggested in the commercial. The W's are being wannabe's and the N's are being mean. But in the political present, the N's justify the means.

Didn't see a ping to you on this one.

my suggestion is that if you do not like it, stop buying smirnoff -- and tell your friends the same thing. let the market dictate...(money talks)

Don't you know nothing? Racism, like hate crime, only originates with white, straight, men. Gheeeeze!

I thought about this commercial a lot. The premise of the video is set in a audio/video recording studio. the "party" is actually a rap video. The white guys must have used some Smirnoff Ice to smooth talk their way into the video. They were not supposed to be there.
I tried to justify it base on those facts, but I still feel as you do.
It's like those sneaker store commercials where the white salesman tries to speak street lingo to a couple of black thug-looking customers. They give him an extremely rude look and mutter something, and the white guy, knowing his place in 2001 Amerika, rightfully shuts up, ashamed.
Why is it uncool to dress normally, speak correctly, and act, well, white? Why is it cool to speak like a ghetto thug, with no command of the English language? Because the snot-nose college grad diversity/PC crowd learned this crap, like this crap... and that's why we see this trash on TV, in the movies, and through our speakers. I'm sick of it. The best thing to do is to make a comment in front of your friends and family every time a commercial is on. After a while, they will begin to see the double standards, the silliness of hip-hop culture's foothold on America, and even liberal bias in the media. It's very easy to start a cultural revolution that way.

You're going to need the Real One player (a virus if ever there was one) and probably Shockwave Flash to see this but here is the direct link to the commercial in question:

I think it is realistic except for the fact that the white guys didn't get shot or stabbed. I don't find it offensive at all.

It sure would and Je$$ie would be on every network bragging about smirnoff donating millions to further Jackson's Rainbow vision.
