Can anyone tell me what is going on with Dick Armey? First his comments on Iraq, and now this. Is he becoming soft now that he is reaching retirement, like Barry Goldwater did? I just find this amazing...

The embargo on Cuba has run its course.

It's time to take away Castro's crutch.

Armey is just another professional politician, speaks his mind, right or wrong, ONLY, after he is no longer in the running for a seat in the house.

I think he wants his 15 minutes of notoriety before he
heads off into oblivion.

Even Jesse Helms, now saying he's ashamed for not doing more on AIDS, falls into that pattern. Is it something about wanting a "legacy," one that the Lefties in the media will now acknowledge? I don't know, but it's very sad.

You find this amazing that a congressman is not afraid to tell the truth now that he does not need to get re-elected.

There are taboo subjects with considerable amount of political landmines that most smart politicians tend to avoid. Cuba is one, Iraq is another one.

Let us talk about Cuba first; this small socialistic dictatorship is irrelevant in the big scheme of things. Yes at one time, during the USSR big days, Cuba was a menace to the US. Now, however, they can hardly feed their people.

The same thing with Iraq, at this time Sadam and Quadafi are simply trying hard to fight revolutions from within to worry about menacing other countries.

Cuba, once it is opened to the US trade would be energized to the demise of Castro. As far as Quadafi/Sadam; they are simply power hungry dictators like the rest of the Arab leaders. Let us not waste our time and money on them. Let us focus our effort on eliminating the hate preaching in mosques, as well as eliminating financing of militant Islamists movement around the world. These movements are inspired and financed by Saudi Arabia, and Iran! Not Iraq!

I find it amazing that we trade with countries like China & Saudi Arabia but *not* Cuba

OK, I won't even try to explain this one.

Something in the '93 White House FBI files, perhaps?

He is still a professor with no real world experience. It is great that he in leaving the Congress...he is my rep and I've been sick of him since 92. 94 was about Newt and he tried to kife him in 98. The guy is out of touch.

More trade will give the people a taste of what they have been missing, and hasten the demise of Communism, as it did with the Soviet Union. I only wish congress had more Texas economists and fewer Northeast lawyers.

I agree with Armey. Flood Cuba with U.S. dollars, tourists, goods, culture, and Fidel will wither on the vine. Fidel can not save face if the U.S. offers it's hand of friendship and he refuses it.

GW should even go as far as to apologize for the Bay of Pigs. Not for moral reasons of course, but for the realpolitik result which will be the liberation of Cuba. The long term good of liberation outweighs the historical good of denying communism validation.

Let Fidel retire in the delusion that he did his country good. Just get him out of the way via a "Thank you for a job well done, here's your gold watch, enjoy your retirement."

he has backed the restrictions on travel and trade only out of loyalty to two Cuban American members of the House.

I guess now that he's retiring, he can admit that he wasn't making decisions based on what's best for the country, but in fact was making decisions based on his friendship with two Cuban-American house members. Lovely.

IMO, the quickest way to destroy that Cuban communist regime is to import capitalism.
