I do not see why so many people are anti-atheism. It's not as if it makes you any less American for it. What do you guys think?

Are you serious? You must not have even seen the sectarian bashing that goes on here, let alone atheist bashing.

I think that you cannot express an intelligible thought, and should not waste bandwidth.
You have nothing to say.

I think it's partly because a lot of people are insecure in what they believe. That goes for Christian vs atheists, atheists vs Christians, one Christian sect vs another, take your pick. Tearing down the other side reinforces their own faith. Immature, but human nature IMHO.
FWIW I was raised a Christian, but lost my faith. I don't know what, if anything is out there beyond the physical world and wouldn't try to guess. I guess I'll find out one of these days.

Many atheist groups want to take away all aspects of religion from any government setting....for example, taking "under God" out of the Pledge in public schools. These groups seek their 'rights' by trying to take other peoples rights away.

I know some people believe in it, but I'm not convinced it exists. I've seen no proof that it exists. Sure there are writings. Those could have been developed by anyone with a creative mind. I don't believe in the evolutionary origination of the species. I've tried, but I have no faith in it. No, I'm going to stick with the Word of God and go out believing that Jesus Christ died for my sins, and will redeem my soul.
As for athiests, if they exist, I wish them well. I think they're sorta like snipes though. I've been on a few hunts, but never found any.

Intrinsically there is nothing wrong with atheism or atheists. What rankles so many of us is that a number of atheists want to strip us of the ability to freely and publically glorify God. We don't want to see one religion installed as the religion of America but great numbers of us do believe in God and want to invoke God's watchful eye at important public events. And we know that the adoration of God was an important reason for the founding of this country and informed the deliberations and development of our form of government. Atheists want to force us to shut our eyes, ears and lips to public displays of obeisance to God.

I don't want to do any of that. All I want is to be left alone, and not be bashed for what I believe or don't believe. And I'll do the same in return.

You can't bring up atheism without being anti-religious, because it's a non-belief, and there's no other reason to bring up your non-belief.
Isn't agnosticism more respectful, less abrasive, less petty, and less egotistical? And what do you mean by "anti-atheism" and "American"?
To: LewisPatriot
The problem is not with atheists, it is with those who want the government to support their religious beliefs.

Atheists who don't desire to "adjust" the country to their lifestyle are fine by me.

If the Middle East was full of atheists, there would be no Jihads.

I admit, a complete non-belief in God on any kind is very irrational, as His existence can never be prooved or disproved ; and those who believe in Him have faith. But I've seen many folks accuse atheists of being unAmerican, which is silly.
To: LewisPatriot
Agnostics OK with me. Atheists? I don't think so. I do not worship Volks Waggens or people as gods.
To: breakem
Maybe it's not exactly that simple, but there's a grain of truth there. Atheism is a belief regarding all religions, and so it is a form of religious belief, at least as I see it. So, to advance one's atheism publicly is to proselytize.

I've seen many folks accuse atheists of being unAmerican, which is silly. One is free to his own accademic or spiritual endeavors, however, activist atheist are unamerican just as activist communists who wish the Under G_d clause to go out the window because they believe in the mega fiesta that we are above all that, which we are not, since no man is sinless.
To: LewisPatriot
It's not necessarily un-American, you're right. I don't see it as being discretionary or wise to promote, but that's just my 2 cents.
To: LewisPatriot
Honest science has an exemption. It's getting harder for me to separate the agendas and greed from the honest science that I read about, though. Maybe it's just age.

Isn't agnosticism more respectful, less abrasive, less petty, and less egotistical? And what's wrong with being abrasive, petty, and egotistical when discussing your view of the world? Isn't that the way you're supposed to be about it? You know, "I'm right, everyone else is wrong, that settles it..." Geez, to say anything else would be to admit weakness, and that's unAmerican.
